Friends of the Wissahickon Seeking Volunteers and Donations to Repair Storm Damage

Observations indicate that the flood levels in the Wissahickon on Sept. 8, were even higher than that of Hurricane Irene.

The Friends of the Wissahickon and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation need volunteers to help repair damage to the park as a result of recent storms and floods. Observations indicate that the in the Wissahickon on Thursday, Sept. 8, were even higher than that of .

To Volunteer

Volunteer initiatives will focus on Valley Green, where flood waters have scoured walkways, destroyed trees and plants, damaged park benches, and exposed utility infrastructure. Workdays will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 17, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet in front of . Please help FOW identify areas in need of repair by sending an email to office@fow.org. Your email with a report of damages should include:

  • name of the site or description of the site (i.e. “Yellow Trail between Hermitage and Leverington”)
  • if possible, a GIS location for the site (this is available on many cell phones)
  • if available, photos you may have of the damage (limit one or two per email)
  • a description of the conditions you observed (i.e., “tree limb down across trail” or “foaming water near stormwater outlet”)
  • your name, email address and phone number
