Population of Chestnut Hill, Other Neighborhoods Likely to Increase in Next 30 Years
The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission came out with a forecast.
The total population of Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy and Germantown is expected to increase by 4.6 percent over the next three decades or so, according to forecasts by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
The three neighborhoods will grow more than their adjacent northwest counterparts between 2010 and 2040. This rate is steady but slower than Philadelphia and surrounding counties in southeastern Pennsylvania at large.
According to a news release, Philadelphia is expected to gain population for the first time since the 1950s, adding over 100,000 people between 2010 and 2040 (an increase of 6.9 percent).

Prior to the 2010 U.S. Census, the DVRPC predicted a loss of 42,000 residents to the city. Instead, Philadelphia gained almost 9,000 residents between 2000 and 2010. An increase of Asian and Latino citizens, in addition to growth in Fishtown, Northern Liberties, East Kensington, and parts of South Philadelphia, caused the population bump.
