Inquirer: Redistricting May Not Be Finished by Deadline

According to the article, a Northeast Philadelphia ward is causing some delays in the process.

According to an article in The Inquirer, City Council has recognized that the may take longer than the Sept. 9 deadline. After that date, council members will have their pay witheld until a boundary map is approved.

According to The Inquirer, Council President Anna C. Verna told reporters that the 56th Ward in Northeast Philadelphia was a subject of much debate. The Inquirer reports that the ward's 31-year leader, John Sabatina, is a force with which council is weary of reckoning.

Several council members were present at a on the issue Wednesday evening, and a third public hearing will be held Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Albert Einstein Medical Center's Gouley Auditorium, 5501 Old York Rd. The hearing is sponsored by Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller and Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco.

Council members return from a summer recess Sept. 8 for a meeting at which they hope to have a redistricting plan to present.
