Harry Potter Hay Maze Opening Soon at Woodmere

Woodmere Art Museum has begun constructing the hay maze on its front lawn.

is gearing up early for October's Harry Potter weekend in Chestnut Hill. To kick off the celebration, the museum will host the return of the large-scale landscape maze to Woodmere’s front lawn, starting Sept. 14.

This year’s maze is titles "Diagon Alley: Woodmere’s Wizarding Market", is a straw labyrinth of concentric squares made with 100-pound bales of straw, and draws its inspiration from the wizard shopping district of the Harry Potter series.

Each weekend leading up to the Harry Potter weekend, Oct. 26-28, Woodmere will have magic-themed family activities.

The maze's creator, Peter E. Brown, also designed last year’s Owl’s Eye maze. This year's maze is made up of bales of straw in four concentric squares, one inside the other. In the outer square, bales are stacked to create post and lintel portals for access to magic markets. Below are the details on the maze:

  •  Dates: Sept. 14-Oct. 28: Fridays, 6-8 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
  • Opening Celebration: Friday, Sept. 14, 6-8 p.m., FREE
  • Admission: $8 per child age four and up (members, $6) or $20 for families of three or more (members, $18)
