Art Exhibit Features Scenes of Chestnut Hill

Melissa Tevere's "A Walk in the Wissahickon" will have an artist reception Jan. 20.

" I love to hike and mountain bike in the Wissahickon," Melissa Tevere said in her statement about her new art exhibition.

The exhibit, called "A Walk in the Wissahickon," features a scene from a covered bridge near Valley Green.

"You can still imagine what Forbidden Drive was like 100-plus years ago when it was still the site of a vibrant mill community. The piece 'Last Bridge Standing' depicts the red covered bridge that is situated between Bells Mill Road and Valley Green. Originally, there were five covered bridges spanning the Wissahickon Creek. Now there is one," Tevere wrote.

Tevere uses a technique called Paper Clothe, in which paper, fabric, found materials, are attached with a watered down adhesive to a piece of muslin or canvas. Her exhibit includes scenes from throughout the Wissahickon, but Tevere specifiaclly has a place in her heart for Chestnut Hill.

"After I’m done walking or riding, I’ll sometimes head over to Chestnut Hill and to for a pint of beer and one of my favorite vegetarian sandwiches ever (The George Bernard Shaw). These are my favorite days in winter," Tevere said.
