Celebrate Blocktoberfest in West Mt. Airy

West Mt. Airy Neighbors will use a 5K and block parties to build some community spirit.

The West Mt. Airy Neighbors will be hosting a "Blocktober Fest" on Saturday, Oct. 5.

"There will be a 5K walk and a 2K walk," said West Mt. Airy Neighbors Executive Director Marilyn Cohen.  "We want everyone to be able to participate."

Cohen said that the idea of the event is to bring the community together in a fun way that's also healthy.

"We want it to be a combination of being both fun and happy," Cohen said.

Cohen added, "After all the community that plays together, stays together.  It's been shown that neighbors who know each other and look out for each other significantly reduce crime in their neighborhoods."

On top of the run and walk, the day will also include block parties that will be dispersed across the neighborhood.

Cohen said that this is the second year that West Mt. Airy Neighbors has thrown the event.

"Last year we had 80 runners," Cohen said.  "This year we already have 200 people signed up."

Cohen also wanted to thank the sponsors.

"The Chestnut Hill Hospital is our gold medal sponsor," Cohen said.  "And Elfant Wissahickon is our silver medal sponsor."

Cohen added, "The business community is also committed to the vitality of Mt. Airy, otherwise there would be no one to visit their shops."

On top of all that, West Mt. Airy Neighbors will also be collecting school supplies.

"We just want everyone to come out and have a good time," Cohen said.

The West Mt. Airy Blocktoberfest officially gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7:45 a.m. at the Allens Lane Train Station.
