ReplyMargaret... agree 100% with the fact that parents must "steer" their children, but the umbilical cord must be cut at some point, and last I checked, the parents don't sit through a 7+ hour school day with a child. WIth so many families having 2 full time working parents, the children, typically only spend 2-3 waking hours with a parent during a work week (kind of tough to "steer" under those conditions - which is why we have to trust the teachers). Music, art, physical education, etc... help to break up a school day, which enables the children to have open, clear minds through a long day! So, as it stands, I'll continue my life with the glass half full & an empty mind, and you can continue yours half empty, cuttting programs for our future children while worrying about "events" that happened in colleges & other towns.... let's all just keep our kids in cages to protect them from something that might happen! Com to think of it, mine as well cut all programs associated with churches, synagogues, boy/girl scouts, little league, etc... as "bad things" have happended with the "leaders" of these organizations as well!! Sounds to me like you are one that has no school age children (probably in the mid 50's to 60's) and care only about keep your taxes to a minimum, no matter what the consequence to future generations!!

ReplyMargaret... you can not be that ignorant to bring Sandusky & the incident at Ridley into this conversation (we are talking Marple Newtown here). Negativity is not what we need in this day & age!!! These programs that are led by OUR teachers, coaches, and activity leaders develop the young minds of our school age children, and help to keep them out of trouble to steer them in the right direction.... it has abolutely NOTHING to do with your "real world" welfare and ebt cards!!! I can't believe I am even wasting my time replying on your comment, and I believe that your intent was stir the pot (in which case your pot is always half empty).

ReplyJoe H.... the general "comment" was sarcasm, and way, way over the top. You are right, there are plenty of examples of the taking of public opinions for an appointed position, as was the case here (my post was a reply to Adams's comments, and Adam did not have any facts). PLENTY of public opionion went into the hiring (not appointing) of the new pricipal. Also, please re-read my post as you mis-quoted me several times... I never said "you can't make this open to the public", I said "you can't make everyone happy". It SHOULD be open to the public, but to certain "groups" (as it was). "Nothing" will get accomplished with the (approx) 35,347 residents of Marple Newtown getting "over" involved in this one position (albeit an important one). I NEVER said to keep one's opinion to themself... only to trust who we have in place (which I agree is sometimes a difficult.... very difficult task). I TOTALLY agree with your last paragraph and, basically, was what I was trying to convey in my long winded comments. Way too much negativity in this world my friend!!

The board has been voted in by the parents & communtity so, in essence, you are involved. Unless you would like to become a board member (or member of any of those parties involved in the selection process), I suggest we trust those involved in day to day operations. Generals don't check with "citizens" before making moves on the battlefield do they? If this was "open to the public", nothing would get accomplished, as you can't make "everyone" happy!! Why can't we just give this young gentlemen a chance, and be positive (for once)? Best of luck to Gregory Puckett!!!

ReplyThe state will still be getting it's income in taxes (i.e. Johnstown Flood 18% tax & it's $200 million in revenue each year). The government is sogreat at overseeing eveything it does as we speak.... which is why the post office and social security are doing so well. The government can't tie it's own shoes... get anything & everything out of it's hands before it spoils!!! One time payout of 4 million & 2.2 in annual revenue? Are those figures from the 60's? Someone is pulling numbers out of the air!! Privatize it!! The state will have zero overhead (storefronts, inventory, employees, etc..), and a windfall of tax revenue! As far as loss of jobs go... wrong again!!! Unions jam that garbage down your throat... I don't believe robots will be stocking shelves and packing my vino in the boxes!!!

ReplyYes.... the township officials all have helicopters to alleviate their traffic problems! Only thing we/you can do if we have an issue is buy the land so it can't be developed, as we live in a free country. All of us are living in a structure that was not there many, many years ago, and there is a good chance complaints were brought up when your house was built, so let's not be hypocrites!!

ReplyLet's hope they can keep the programs with no increase!! Call me crazy, but wasn't this all because one board member spoke out of line? Per Mr. Lanzalotto's comments prior to opening up to the public, the budget has not even been addressed yet. That particular person should keep comments to themself, and this would never have been an issue! 8 board members (who volunteer), along with the administration (who are paid) all look bad from one person... how's the saying go, "one bad apple"? In speaking with a few of the board members, it doesn't seem as if band & art were ever in danger... now everyone stop worrying & go spend some money to get this economy rolling!!

ReplyTrash once a week may help eliminate "some" labor, but doesn't eliminate trash costs (as the sanitation dept. would still have to take the same amount of trash @ the escalated price from $23.45 per ton to $33). Picking up 1 day in lieu of 2 doesn't make trash go away. Also, it would take more time on the 1 day to pick up the trash which could result in overtime pay. Even so, we would still need to pick up twice a week in the summer... we all know what trash smells like after missing a pick up day due to a holiday in the summer!! "Obvious source of savings"? Maybe pennies, not dollars!!

To clarify one of my previous comments regarding Sandusky & the Ridley Teacher, and the fact they should not have been brought into these comments.... Sandusky was the founder of "The Second Mile", a charitable youth organization, and The "Ridley Teacher" was an ENGLISH teacher (not music, art, physical education, etc...). Should we eliminate all English programs due to her actions?
