State lawmakers ended one of their first sessions of 2012 by approving a bill that allows non-profit organizations to use things like raffles and prize drawings, what the state calls “small games of chance,” as a means of fundraising. The bill, approved in the Senate on Thursday, is an amendment of a 1988 law. The Senate also approved a bill that calls for all potential real estate appraisal management companies to be certified by a state board. The House approved a bill dictating how much money in punitive damages can be sought from physicians and other medical providers. The House finished its 2011 session by passing several pieces of legislation. Though the Senate was out of session, the House approved measures on budgets, congressional redistricting, and motor vehicle laws. Below are votes in the Pennsylvania General Assembly for legislators representing Mt. Airy. House of Representatives SB1249: State House members affirmed a redistricting bill for U.S. House of Representative members on Dec. 27. In doing so, they approved the Republican version introduced and voted for in the Senate. Gov. Corbett has signed off on the bill, which will go into effect for the 2012 congressional election. Narrow vote leaves final passage to the House.
Leaving it to the last minute, the state Senate Wednesday approved redistricting legislation for congressional districts by a 26-24 margin. This vote affirms a Republican plan introduced by Majority Leader Sen. Dominic Pileggi (R-9) and was approved in a mostly partisan fashion—no Democrats voted for it and only four Republicans dissented. The bill only needs House approval and Gov. Corbett's signature to officially redraw the congressional districts in time for the 2012 election. An alternate plan offered as an amendment by Democrats was defeated earlier in day. In Philadelphia, this largely keeps the district of Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-2) the same. Though he still represents Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Roxborough and Manayunk, Fattah loses …
