According to comments from MAUSA, construction on a new charter school facility could begin in June.
Things appear to be going will in the planned expansion of the Wissahickon Charter School. Anuj Gupta, the executive director of Mt. Airy USA, presented an update about the proposed expansion at the Chew and Belfied Neighbor's Club on Jan 30, telling the civic group that project to bring a school to Washington Lane was on track. "We're very excited about how this is unfolding so far," he said. "This is a big milestone for us." According to Gupta, the city zoning board approved of the plan to build at K-through-eighth grade school, granting an exception to build on land that is zoned as "industrial" at Chew and Washington. A new expansion could be coming for Wissahickon Charter School.
Though its still several steps away, Wissahickon Charter School could expand to a second campus near the Washington Lane train station as early as 2014. In a presentation made to the East Mt. Airy Neighbors board of directors on Tuesday, Mt. Airy USA executive director Anuj Gupta outlined how a land deal between the charter school and the Mt. Airy group could help the school expand into East Mt. Airy. "Wissahickon Charter School has had a very successful model," he said. "They have a 96 percent attendance rate, almost no teacher turnover, steadily increasing scores on their PSSAs. Wissahickon Charter students visited the park recently.
Wissahickon Charter students came to Mt. Airy recently to visit the park outside the Lovett library branch to display their blueprints for planned park renovations and to spend some time there. Here are some photos. Mt. Airy USA hopes to work to renovate the park in the near future.
