For Hattie Carter, an attempt to inform the city about a quality of life issue involving a garage has turned into a painful merry-go-round of challenges. Here are the basics. Carter said she has been trying pretty hard to get people from the city to help her out with something near her house that she says is an eyesore. She lives on the unit block of West Weaver Street, and said there's an abandoned garage behind her property, on West Upsal Street. She's been trying to get in touch with the city about this for years. According to her, though, she hasn't gotten too much of a response. "It's evident that the owner doesn't want to do anything," Carter said. Carter has, lately, tried to mobilize the power of West Mt. Airy Neighbors to do …

Editor's note: The following article was written by West Mt. Airy Neighbors' Burt Froom, who is penning a monthly column on the neighborhood's history called "Yesterday and Today." You can also see the article here. Having toured, in earlier articles, George Carpenter’s palatial mansion Phil-Ellena, the largest Greek Revival palace in the country when constructed in 1844, we turn now to visit the grounds of the estate, as it was about 1870, ten years after his death. George Carpenter often opened his 300 acre park to public inspection. On such occasions, there was a guest book to sign and visitors were given a copy of Carpenter’s 1844 pamphlet about Phil-Ellena, entitled A Brief Description of Phil-Ellena. As we enter the grounds, the …

The closure will be from 2 to 11 p.m. on Aug. 16.
Germantown Avenue will close from 2 to 11 p.m. for Night Market Aug. 16. The most recent West Mt. Airy Neighbors newsletter discussed the closure. The 6800-7200 blocks will be closed during that time. "Buses will be re-routed along side streets," the newsletter said. "Residents are encouraged to have their cars parked in front of their homes by 5 p.m. if possible to avoid parking problems that evening." The 23 bus, which runs along Germantown Avenue, will be affected by the closure but will continue running during that time. Night Market will take place from 6 to 10:30 p.m. and will feature food and craft vendors as well as musical performances.

Editor's note: The following article was written by West Mt. Airy Neighbors' Burt Froom, who is penning a monthly column on the neighborhood's history called "Yesterday and Today." You can also see the article here. We are continuing our fantasy tour of George Carpenter’s Greek Revival palace, Phil-Ellena, in 1870, ten years after his death. Last month, we visited the Drawing Rooms and the Parlors. In this article, we are taken back through the Drawing Room to the Library, the domain of George Carpenter the businessman and scholar. It is a large room, about 29 by 23 feet, with lawn views looking east and south. The walnut wood bookcases and furniture are Gothic style. There are also Grecian-style chairs modeled after the ancient Greek …

The centers will be open Friday and Saturday.

Cathedral Rd.): Open until 8 p.m. - Falls of Schuylkill Branch (3501 Midvale Ave.): Open until 8 p.m. An excessive heat warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, and that will likely be the hottest day yet, with temperatures that could top 100 degrees. A cohousing community could come to the site.
A planned development for the former Garrett-Dunn historical site on Germantown Avenue cleared a major hurdle Wednesday. The city's Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the site for residential use, which will allow Iron Stone Development, which owns the area at 7048 Germantown Ave., to build condominiums there. The area was previously zoned for commercial use. The Garrett-Dunn House was designed in the 1850s and was on the National and Philadelphia Registers of Historic Places. It was, however, destroyed by a fire in August 2009 after a lightning storm. Efforts had been underway to build condominiums on the site before the fire before they fell through. It appears now, however, as if that vision will likely become a reality and that the …

Pernsely taught at Houston School.
West Mt. Airy resident and former West Mt. Airy Neighbors officer Leslie Leroy Pernsely died June 12 after a brief illness. A Legacy.com obituary said he was a WMAN officer for 25 years. He also taught at Henry H. Houston School in Mt. Airy. From the obituary: Les loved to "tinker" with things and could fix just about anything that was broken. He maintained a tool collection that rivaled any hardware store. On a personal level, Les was a organized person. He firmly believed that there was a place to put everything and everything should always be in its place. He never completed a task without "dotting every i and crossing every t." Les had a warm and friendly personality. He enjoyed his family, his neighbors, and his friends. He was also …
