Renowned Chorus to Perform in Mt. Airy

Northern Harmony, the New England chorus specializing in world music, will return to Philadelphia for a concert as part of its winter tour on Friday, March 1, 7:30 p.m.

The following is a press release. Northern Harmony, the New England chorus specializing in world music, will return to Philadelphia for a concert as part of its winter tour on Friday, March 1, 7:30 p.m., to be held at the Unitarian church, Lincoln Drive and Wayne Avenue. The chorus is unusual in its combination of the wild and unrestrained sound of New England singing schools of the nineteenth century (what is called "shape note" singing), American bluegrass, the hard edged style of Bulgarian folk music, the unusual strains of the music of Caucasian Georgia, the striking melodies of South Africa, and songs drawn from the harmony traditions of other European and African countries. Examples of their style can be found on youtube.com, search…

Weavers Way Looking for Directors

Members "in good standing" could win a seat on the co-op's board of directors.

If you were looking for a way to have more influence over what the Weavers Way Co-op is doing in Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy, your chance is here. The co-op is in the process of holding elections for a seat on the board of directors. According to a statement from Weavers Way, "members in good standing are eligible to be a part of figuring out what the will of the membership is and then to guide and lead management to implement that will." An informational meeting, including obligations and qualifications tied to being on the board, is being held at 555 Carpenter Lane on Jan 23 at 7 p.m. To RSVP for the meeting, contact David Woo at @woo3d@earthlink.net. See the co-op's Facebook page for more information.

Weavers Way community programs and Valley Green Bank are hosting an electronic recycling event in Chestnut Hill on Saturday, January 12. The event will accept any electronic item that has a plug, according to a release from Weavers Way. Those bringing items to recycle are asked to provide small donations to help benefit the co-op. Suggested donations are as follows: The event will be held, rain or shine, in the parking lot of the Valley Green Bank building in Chestnut Hill at 23 W Highland Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WWCP is a separate organization from Weavers Way Co-op, and is a nonprofit, which means your donation may be tax deductible in full or in part.   more ›

Weavers Way to Host Blood Drive

Both Weavers Way locations will host the drive.

Weavers Way announced in a release that it will host blood drives at both of its stores in Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill on Dec 7. Blood donation buses will be parked outside the Mt. Airy store (on Carpenter Lane) and the Chestnut Hill store (on Germantown Avenue) from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Appointments are highly encouraged. To reserve a slot, please call Jon Roesser at 215-843-2350, ext. 132. The drive is being done in conjunction with the Miller-Keystone Blood Center, which is a non-profit bluff supplier that serves the Chestnut Hill hospital. Jon McGoran, a spokesperson for the co-op, said in a statement that the motivation for the drive is the traditionally depleted holiday blood supply. "During the holiday season, blood supplies tend …

Weavers Way Has Reopened

The renovations are complete.

Weavers Way has reopened after its renovation caused its main store to close for almost two months. The building has been spruced up and looks totally different. According to the co-op, it's "still a work in progress." But you'll definitely see a large difference. The co-op will have a party Sept. 29 to officially reopen the store from noon to 4 p.m.

Have You Been Taking Weavers Way's Shuttle?

It's running three days per week.

We're curious about earlyish returns on the Weavers Way shuttle between its Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill stores. Have people been taking it? Has it been useful? What do people think? Let us know in the comments section. The shuttle is running Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. It's been making a loop between the store during those times about every 20 minutes.

Local Co-op's Future Becomes Clearer As Timeline Emerges

Manayunk-Roxborough Food Co-op most likely won't be new Weavers Way.

Though many variables exist, one aspect seems clear with the potential Manayunk-Roxborough Food Cooperative—Weavers Way most likely won't be directly involved.  David Schiman, local acupuncturist and chair for the growing co-op's steering committee, said aspects like location and membership structure are up in the air. However, Weavers Way's current financial obligations will preclude the Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill organization from opening an affiliated store west of the Wissahickon. "Right now, Weaves Way can't take action, and we're not interested in waiting for them. They are involved in helping us as an adviser... and down the road, we can always revisit the idea of joining the groups together," he said. Since preliminary talks and a …
