Local Schools Battle at the Penn Relays

Several local schools did well at this past weekend's Penn Relays.

Several local high schools participated in this weekend's Penn Relays.  Here are how some of the school's fared in a couple of events provided by the Penn Relays website. Germantown High School's best finish was in the girls' 4x400 relay for the Philadelphia public schools.  That team finished fourth, and the team members are: Jahneya Mitchell, Savannah Patterson, Zipporah Brooks, Kayla Foster. The Germantown High boys also finished 14 in the 4x400 relay for the Philadelphia public schools. Springside Chestnut Hill Academy finished second in the Prep School 4x400 relay.  The members of the team are: Drew Davis, Bridget Lipp, Julia Reeves, Brooklynn Broadwater. Mixing Trash with Art, Literally

Students from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy add an artistic flair to trash compactors in Manayunk.

Recently, students from the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy completed a project where they wrapped 14 of Manayunk's Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors in art. The freshly adorned trash compactors will make their debut this weekend as part of the Manayunk strEAT Festival. “Manayunk is the perfect town to implement this public art project that also promotes a green initiative, as it’s nestled right on the banks of the Schuylkill River.” President of the Manayunk Special Services District Dan Neducsin said in a press release. Two Thefts at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, Police Say

Two unrelated thefts happen a day from each other at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Theft: On March 8, at approximately 5:45 p.m., police received a report of a theft at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy located at 8000 Cherokee St. According to police, two MacBook Pro laptops were stolen from the school’s mailroom. Theft: On March 9, at approximately 10 p.m., police received a report of a theft at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy located at 8000 Cherokee St. According to police, a woman’s bag was taken from the table where she was sitting while at a work function. Police say that the bag contained credit cards, a driver’s license and an iPhone. The credit card has also been used since being taken, police say.

Chestnut Hill Hosting 'Hoops Madness'

The Chestnut Hill Community Association will be hosting a basketball tournament for kids in honor of March Madness.

In the spirit of March Madness, the Chestnut Hill Community Association will be hosting a three-on-three ‘Hoops Madness’ tournament at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on March 23. The tournament for kids ages 6-18 will include a three-on-three tournament as well as a three-point and foul shooting contests. “I think it could be a good long-term event for us,” said association president Brien Tilley.  “We’ve contacted all the schools in the area and all the sports associations.” Tilley added, “We should get a good turnout.  It should be fun.” Tilley also said that the association has not had a hard time finding sponsors for the event.  He said that several local businesses are on board including the Chestnut Hill Hospital, Cosimo’s Pizza, …

Athletic Fields Improvements Gain CHCA Approval

The Springside Chestnut Hill Academy athletic fields project got the ok from the community association after some neighbor concerns.

After neighbor concerns delayed the approval of the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy athletic field improvements, the Chestnut Hill Community Association was able to vote, unanimously, in favor of the project at Thursday’s Executive Committee meeting. Neighbors adjacent to the field rose concerns about screening their driveways from the new constructions and security lighting that will be installed on the property at the July CHCA Board of Directors meeting. At the meeting, the board suggested that the school representatives and the neighbors work together on an agreement before the association would approve the variances requested by the school. Neighbors Ask for More Discussion on SCHA Field Improvements

Asking for more time to work with the school, neighbors asked the CHCA Board of Directors to delay approving the renovations.

While the Development Review Committee recommended the approval of variances for Springside Chestnut Hill Academy's athletic field improvements, with some provisions, several neighbors spoke up at the Chestnut Hill Community Association meeting Thursday night of the board of directors to ask otherwise. Peter Marvin, whose home is adjacent to the field, said that there had not been enough communication between the school and the neighbors. "We are not opposed to the varience, but we can not yet support it. We hope to come back some weeks from now and say we do support it," Marvin said. Springside Chestnut Hill Renovations Headed to Zoning Board

The Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear three applications for zoning issues related to SCHA's athletic field improvements.

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy will go in front of the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustments Wednesday, July 25, to discuss the renovations of its atheltic fields. The board will review three requests for variances: These renovations have gone through the Chestnut Hill Community Association and come through with approval. SCHA Valedictorian Speaks About His Future

Nicholas Rosamilia was profiled by 6ABC for coming in at the head of the Class of 2012 at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

A record 69 young women graduated in the girls' Springside Chestnut Hill commencement Wednesday.

The Springside Chestnut Hill Academy girls had a better go of the weather for their graduation than their male counterparts. On a lovely spring day, 69 seniors observed their last day at the school at the Class of 2012 girls commencement.

SCHA Student Drowns in Pool During Elementary Grad Party

Police say his father found him in the deep end.

A freshman student from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy died Friday after he was found in the deep end of his family's backyard pool, according to a press release from the Whitemarsh Police Department. Police say the the 15-year-old was at a fourth-grade graduation party being held by his family at their home in Lafayette Hill. Approximately 18-20 10-year-old children were in attendance, along with "a few" parents, when the incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. After the teen's father realized that his son had not been seen for several minutes, the man went into the pool and found him at the bottom of the eight-foot deep end, the release said.
