Five Things to Know About Kadillac Tattoo

Get to know Mt. Airy's newest business.

Kadillac Tattoo opened its doors in Mt. Airy on Saturday, Feb 2. Here are five things to know about the new business. 1) It Isn't a Fly-by-Night Operation: Eric Perfect, the shop's owner and one of its tattoo artists, has been tattooing since 1990. Perfect opened his first parlor in Roxborough in the late 90s before moving it to Northeast Philadelphia. "I have 23 years experience tattooing, " he said. "[We've got] another guy with 13 years experience. There's a lot of knowledge and respect for the craft of tattooing here." 2) Minors Need Not Apply: By law, a 16-year-old in Philadelphia can come into a tattoo parlor and get ink with parental consent. Not at Kadillac. Perfect said that he wouldn't ink a minor, even if they have permission …

Pet Acupuncture Coming to Mt. Airy, Andorra

Two Northwest vets are expanding their services to include pet acupuncture.

As a veterinary doctor, Dr. Micki Mooney is available for surgeries, routine wellness vists and medical patient visits in animals; all the things one usually takes their pet to the vet for. However, Dr. Mooney offers a service that is a little less common: veterinary acupuncture. Dr. Mooney will be offering this service at both the Mr. Airy Animal Hospital and the Andorra Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Mooney, a New Jersey native, attended Rutgers University, where she received a BS in Animal Science with a minor in economics.  She earned her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Just prior joining the Mt Airy Animal Hospital and Andorra Veterinary Clinic, she was a practicing veterinarian and chief of …

Update: Frank's Closed for Two Weeks

Illness has kept the Chestnut Hill barber shop closed.

Frank's Barber Shop in Chestnut Hill has been closed for the last few days due to illness, but those looking for their haircut can come back soon. According to a sign on the barber shop's door, Frank is expected to open the shop back up Thursday, Jan 31. Here's what the sign on the door says: "Frank is a bit under the weather, but he is doing much better. He will return Thursday. Until then, you will look fine." Read more about Frank's here. Update: We got an email from Frank's granddaughter and it looks like his return is a little premature. According to family, Frank will be back at his barber shop in approximately two weeks, meaning that those looking for a cut should check back in mid-February.

Modern Bird: From Home-Made to Boutique

Find out how one Chestnut Hill business went from an in-home operation to a bottom-of-the-hill establishment.

When Laura Flavin moved to Philadelphia with her husband in 2009, she didn’t originally plan on opening her own store for Modern Bird. Flavin, a silversmith who creates and sells her own jewelry at her Germantown Avenue boutique, got her start selling her creations on Etsy.com. Though she had run a store in Florida before moving to the city, when she stumbled across her to-be store space at the bottom of the hill, she was unsure what she would do with it. But with Flavin’s background in retail and her love of people, Modern bird grew into the brick and mortar store at 7904 Germantown Ave. The space gave her the opportunity to move from her home studio and into a “bigger and better” space to work, and also gave her the opportunity to curate…

Modern Bird is an excellent addition to the Lower Hill shopping area. She has beautiful silver jewelry which I think is hard to find.   more ›

Mt. Airy Liquor Store Closed

The state wine and spirits store is closed for an "emergency."

Those looking to buy wine and spirits in Mt. Airy will have to head out of the neighborhood for the time being. The state Wine and Spirits Store at Germantown Avenue and Mt. Airy Avenue is closed until further notice, according to a sign on the front of the store. It's a little unclear as to what closed the store (the sign on the door just says "closed due to emergency"), but there is some plywood up on the storefront. The two closest area liquor stores are 8705 Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill and the corner of Chelten and Knox Street in Germantown.

I just want to let the record show, Nate Adams, that your source for this story was a sign. A great reporter never reveals his sources, Nate Adams, and I appreciate that you did not name the sign. I can picture it all too clearly in my mind. You, Nate Adams, strolled up to the liquor store to pick up a fresh bottle of Wild Turkey, no doubt thinking about all of the interesting people you had …   more ›
