The church needs an exception from the city's zoning board, but it won't require any building expansion.
New Covenant Campus could be expanding its Sunday nursery care into a full operation, if a late November zoning hearing goes in the institution' favor. Albert Blackstock, the CFO of New Covenant Church, presented an application to the West Mt. Airy Neighbors zoning committee to allow the church to use its on-site nursery facilities, currently only being utilized during Sunday service, as a full-time business for the church. Because the church is zoned in a residential neighborhood, it would need to be granted a special exception by the city's zoning board at its Nov. 27 meeting, but Blackstock says that the current proposal requires no structural changes to the existing property. "This would increase our ability to serve the community," he…

After ten months on Germantown Avenue, the home goods shop is doing well.
After 10 months in Chestnut Hill, owner of Hipster Home, Dave Friday, said the move from Phoenixville was a risk that paid off. “It was a risk on many levels. At the point in Phoenixville, we had some legs but we weren’t making any money,” Friday said. Paying the bills for the store, but not being able to pay the bills at home was a catalyst for he move. And since the store took its new location on Germantown Avenue, selling more furniture has been a somewhat unexpected bonus. “We knew we would sell more furniture, but we didn’t know how much more,” Friday said. The cake will be going up against more than 20 bakeries throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey to attempt to take the title of "Most Loved Cake" at a Feb. 11 fundraiser in Princeton. The boutique had been open since June 2010.
Be Sure Girl Unique Boutique has closed after being open on the 7100 block of Germantown Avenue for more than a year. The boutique, which was previously housed at 7150 Germantown Ave., has vacated the premises after opening in June 2010. A sign on the door of the building there indicates it's now for rent. Stacy Ingram, who owned the boutique, said in November 2010 that she hoped the plus-size store would cater to all women in an unusual way. It carried clothing that ranged from size 0 to size 30. The store, she said, was just the first step in Ingram's plan to supply women with clothing. She talked about starting a non-profit organization that would supply women with cancer with hats that have hair attached. Ingram made those by hand at …

MonkeyReader.com is an interactive online shop with a philanthropic side.
When a brick-and-mortar shop wasn’t working out, a few Chestnut Hill residents decided to do the next best thing: open up shop online. The founders of MonkeyReader.com, Jim Bolno, David Riviore and Dave Lennett have been operating the family-oriented reading and entertainment site since 2009. The site is based in Chestnut Hill, as Bolno and Riviore are residents, but reaches a worldwide customer base. “We have visitors from all over the world who come to our site. One great thing about the Internet, it doesn’t confine you geographically. Whether your business is based out of Chestnut Hill or Des Moines, Iowa, you can get customers anywhere,” Lennett said. The partners worked together when they owned Discovery Books in downtown Philadelphia…
