Mutual Mt. Airy Attracts Area Elderly

The first meeting of Mutual Mt. Airy attracted dozens of area elderly looking to form a support community.

Dozens of Mt. Airy senior citizens turned put for the first meeting of Mutual Mt. Airy, a newly-forming group focused on aging in place, at Lovett Library Monday night. The meeting was largely focused on crowd-sourcing the most important issues that the area's residents would like to see the group provide, according to Peter Javsicas, one of the group's founding members. "We're here to find out … what we want in in the Mt. Airy neighborhood in helping each other out for mutual aid," he said. "We're trying to make a community of folks who help each outer out while aging in place while staying in our own homes as long as we can." Mt. Airy Residents Are Trying to Age in Place

A group of Mt. Airy residents are trying to re-create a sense of neighborhood in the Northwest.

The idea, Peter Javsicas says, is to grow old together, to live in a community of independent people who all share the same idea: aging in place, in peace. "It would be nice to have a group of people who lived close together, a neighborhood that grows old together and supports each other," he said. "It could put off the day when you might have to seek some other option." That idea is central to Mutual Mt. Airy, a new group that Javasicas and a group of Mt. Airy residents, his wife, Anne and neighbor Deborah Cooper, are trying to create. According to a release from the group, Mutual Mt.
