Get a look at a new business coming to West Mt. Airy.
What once was a gas station could soon be a showcase for artists and merchants of all stripes, once Carlton Tolbert gets through with it. Tolbert owns the property at 7061 Lincoln Drive in West Mt. Airy. He hopes to repurpose and reopen the space behind the CVS as Showcase Station, a self-styled variety store that will sell packaged food. The real appeal of the space, he said, is its versatility. “It’s essentially a white box,” he said. “It used to be a gas station, so it has high ceilings and it’s really a very adaptable space.” Tolbert says he hopes to use property to host pop-up events for area artists and merchants to showcase their work and sell their products. “We want this to be something special for [people] who might not have a …

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation was recognized.
A construction project that changed traffic patterns near the Gustine Lake Interchange for over a year has just received an award. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation received the 2011 Project of the Year Award (in the over $10 million category) from the Delaware Valley Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers this week for the project. The $20.2 million project enabled engineers to repair four structurally deficient bridges and remove a fifth. It took place in the area where Lincoln Drive, Ridge Avenue, City Avenue and I-76 come together near East Falls and Manayunk. [What did you think of the project? Tell us in the comments.] Lincoln Drive traffic was affected as a result. Southbound drivers were forced to stop at …

The road was most recently closed between Johnson Street and Morris Street.
Update: 11:57 a.m. Multiple car accidents took place on Lincoln Drive Tuesday morning during a slightly rainy commute. Police at the scene closed off Lincoln between Morris Street and Johnson Street a little after 9 a.m., which caused traffic to back up at those two streets as drivers looked for alternate routes. They said an oily substance had been spread on part of the road, so they were waiting for sand from Fairmount Park officials before they reopened it. At least one person was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center as a result of the final crash. Earlier accidents had taken place closer to Wissahickon Avenue. Police said four happened Tuesday morning in the same general area. The road was reopened after 10 a.m.

A larger project will take place in two years.
A retaining wall has been stablized along Lincoln Drive near Forbidden Drive, ending a period of time in which a portion of a path along the thoroughfare was closed. The Streets Department of Philadelphia said Tuesday that the construction along the path between Forbidden Drive and the Pabst Lane Bridge is complete. About 500 feet of the wall was required to be stabilized after heavy rains over the summer weakened it. "The wall was undermined by erosion and had significant damage to the mortar joints," a Streets Department release said. The Streets Department will design and construct an architectural treatment for the repaired wall as part of a larger Lincoln Drive rehabilitation effort for 2014.
