Rerun Plus: Our Top Articles of 2011

A look at what made news this year.

Our conundrum with any "Top Articles of 2011" list that was scheduled to run this week is similar to our problem with our "Top Photos" post—it's going to be virtually identical to our list from our anniversary on Oct. 10 that detailed our best articles from our first year. So we'll repost those and add a few (check Nos. 3 and 2 to see what we added). Happy New Year. 10. "Undercover Police Search West Sedgwick Garage." July 13, 2011. No one can deny that it was strange and scandalous to hear that a garage on the 500 block of West Sedgwick Street was the site of a methamphetamine operation. Undercover police searched the site on this July day, looking for anything that could find that was connected to the case, while neighbors watched, …

A relatively unbiased coverage of the candidates running for city council would be my number one story! Where else did we get each candidate's new, good, ideas for the future of Mt. Airy?   more ›

Medium Rare Cinema's Top Movie Trends of 2011

Critic Adam Lippe writes about film.

Anyone who tells you that there’s a formula for producing successful Hollywood movies is a liar. If there was such a formula, then every comic book film that has come out, such as Thor, Captain America, The Green Lantern, etc., would have been a huge financial boon, and then studios could go back to taking chances on more interesting, smaller movies. But, of course, there’s no way to predict how the public will respond to anything, so movies are made by people who operate entirely out of fear. The formula works as such; there’s no reason to make a $40 million movie that will take $50 million to promote and make prints for. It’s cheaper to either not make the movie, or if you’ve inherited the property, to just bury it. But if you have a $…

The List: Our Top Photos of the Year

A look at what looked good in 2011.

We have already run a post detailing our top photos of our first year in existence for our one-year anniversary. That's why this article that has to do with our top photos of 2011 isn't as original as it could be. But hopefully you'll find some value in it. In the previous post, local photographer Steve Donegan selected his favorite Photos of the Week from our first year. Here, we've added a few from the final three months of 2011. Let us know your favorite in the comments section.

The List: Mt. Airy Readers' Favorite Books of 2011

Booksellers from Walk a Crooked Mile Books and Big Blue Marble Bookstore tell us which books sold the most copies in 2011.

We spoke with booksellers at both of Mt. Airy's independent bookstores to find out what neighborhood residents have been reading this year. Here's what we found. Greg Williams, owner of Walk a Crooked Mile Books in East Mt. Airy, sells used books. He said Kurt Vonnegut and J.D. Salinger books are perennial favorites, and his customers also tend to like Graham Greene. "It may not surprise you to learn that I sell a lot of literature, a lot of kids books, a lot of detective novels and science fiction," Williams wrote in an email. He also sells a lot of Greek and Roman history and literature, and his poetry and philosophy sections are popular too. "In this neighborhood we also have a lot of people interested in cinema and drama and also art …

Our Top Business Stories of 2011

Night market, art expo and more.

Every year is one for businesses to open and close. But 2011 seemed like one where a lot of that went down. People are probably sick of hearing about it by now, but the economy is certainly continuing to play a role on Mt. Airy's Main Street—which is called Germantown Avenue—and elsewhere around the neighborhood. But it wasn't all gloom and doom this year. As you'll see, there were plenty of uplifting business stories, and people here are continuing to work to ensure that Mt. Airy has a good business climate. Here are our top five business stories of the year. (Honorable mentions: The strange effect Hurricane Irene had on business and Occupy Philly's effect on Valley Green Bank.) 5. "Business Association to Be Reborn in Mt. Airy" (Dec. 21…

Our Top Sports Stories of 2011

Germantown High, Mt. Airy Baseball and more.

I'll grant you that Mt. Airy Patch doesn't cover as much sports as some other Patch sites have in the past. But we try to get to games when we can. That means mostly covering Germantown High School matches, but it also means we'll cover Mt. Airy Baseball, the Mt. Airy Bantams and other recreational sports. Here's our top five. (Honorable mentions: Anna B. Day School's Eagles rally; Phillies fans chanting "U.S.A." after news of Osama Bin Laden being killed spread during a Sunday night game.) 5. "Recap: Mt. Airy Baseball Championship Day" (June 20). I hope this article gave our amateur baseball players a chance in the spotlight. It's always pretty cool to be written about when you're young; Michael Kleiner's recap of championship day—which …
