The Mt. Airy BID will host a public forum to discuss parking issues on Germantown Avenue.
The Mt. Airy Business Improvement District will host a public forum on parking on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m., at The Gathering Place located at 6755 Germantown Ave. The forum will focus on parking challenges in the 6700 and 6800 blocks of Germantown Avenue. “Parking on those blocks becomes more challenging as the area continues to grow,” said BID director Hollie Malamud-Price. “We’re trying to find a solution that is beneficial to both the businesses and the residents.” Malamud-Price said that the problem stems from the businesses on Germantown Avenue not necessarily having a lot of turnover throughout the day, limiting the parking options. There are no permits, no meters and no lots at that end of the Avenue,” Malamud-Price said. “We …

Blocks of Germantown Avenue will be closed on Sunday for the Chestnut Hill Home and Garden Festival.
The Chestnut Hill Home and Garden Festival started 17 years ago as a way to counter-balance the arts festival in the fall. Since then, it has grown into an event that brings people from all over. Beginning Sunday, May 5, at 11 a.m., it is expected to bring a lot of people. “We estimate that there will be between 20 and 30,000 people at this festival,” said Peggy Miller of the Chestnut Hill Business Association. “The police tell us that the crowd turns over about two and a half times.” The Home and Garden Festival will feature around 260 booths lining Germantown Avenue that will sell and show garden and home décor items. “There will be booths about gardening,” Miller said. “But, there will also be businesses and non-profits, people …

As the holiday season approaches, a non-traditional kind of store is coming to Germantown Avenue. Two pop-up shops, shops that come into a vacant real estate location for a limited amount of time, have recently appeared on the Northwest. Curio in Chestnut Hill, which specializes in home decorations, opened its doors on Thursday while the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's pop-up shop on Germantown Avenue was recently featured in a gift guide from Visit Philly. The idea of pop-up shops is not a new one: things like political phone banks and halloween costume shops have long been utilizing the pop-up model to take advantage of vacancies for a limited time. Still, it begs the question: are these pop-up shops a good thing for the Northwest?

Find out how a realtor made the jump into antiques.
Meet Hertis Smithey and Michael Boyle, the general manager and owner of Owen's Antiques on Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy. The store recently celebrated is grand re-opening Q: Hertis, you are a realtor by trade. How did you make the jump from realtor to the general manager of an antique store? Smithey: Well, sales, marketing and customer service are the common denominators. Michael has been great in trusting me with the marketing and the acquiring of pieces [for the store] and that's been great. I've always had an interest in art and antiques. I took a course on art at Columbia University, I have a friend who is an art historian, I love The Antiques Roadshow and I used to live on Antiques Row at 18th and Pine, so while I've never been …
