Local Vendors Prepare to Take Part in Night Market

The market is coming up Aug. 16.

There will likely be lots of food trucks at the Mt. Airy Night Market on Aug. 16, just like there have been at previous iterations of the festival in Northern Liberties and the Italian Market earlier this year. But the Night Market festivals, which are run by The Food Trust, also focus on keeping things local. Here are the local food businesses that have applied to participate (many of them are the usual suspects): Mt. Airy USA Director of Commercial Corridor …

Rain Barrels to Soon Populate Germantown Avenue

There will be a ceremony June 26 to welcome their presence.

The Mt. Airy Business Improvement District will unveil its rain barrels in a ceremony on June 26 at 2 p.m. in front of Geechee Girl Rice Cafe. A news release said it is the first BID in the city to use rain barrels to water flower baskets and tree wells. Twenty rain barrels were donated by the Philadelphia Water Department for this project. Rain barrels were also painted by local artists in partnership with the Mt. Airy Art Garage. The effort was the brainchild of BID Executive Director Hollie Malamud-Price and Libbie Hawes, the Preservation Director of Cliveden of the National Trust. Video Talks About Valerie Erwin's Rice and Recipes

The Geechee Girl chef discusses the dish in a recent video.

Valerie Erwin has gotten lots of acclaim as a chef on the local level and beyond. In a recent video for Philly in Focus' "Love Philly Food" series, the Geechee Girl Rice Cafe chef talks about how she came up with the recipes she uses at her restaurant. You'll love the close-up shots of the dishes. Those recipes include smoked fish chowder, rainbow trout stuffed with deviled crab and shortribs oxtail style with whipped sweet and white potatoes and sauteed greens (these are all specials this weekend). Geechee Girl will celebrate its annual Mardi Gras week from Feb. 15 to 19, and it will serve jambalaya, red beans and rice, BBQ shrimp and rice beignets during that time.
