Lack of Volunteers Could Put Mt. Airy Day in Jeopardy

Organizers of the event say that more volunteers are needed if the event is to continue.

Mt. Airy Day was held almost two weeks ago now, and after everything was said and done, there’re was one-thing organizers could’ve used more of—volunteers. “It’s something I would love to keep doing,” said Mt. Airy Day organizer Janet Amato at last week’s East Mt. Airy Neighbors meeting.  “But we really need people to help run the event.” This year’s Mt. Airy Day was so short-staffed that organizers are afraid it might not be able to continue if more people don’t step up to the plate. “I would like to be able to continue the event, but we need more bodies there,” Amato said. Mt. Airy Day takes months of planning.  In fact, organizers will start the early stages of planning next year’s event next month. But, after all that planning, people …

Mt. Airy Neighbors Applies for More Funding

The East Mt. Airy Neighbors will apply for Neighborhood Advisory Committee status that could provide an additional $60,000 in funding.

East Mt. Airy Neighbors president Kent Reichert discussed applying to the city of Philadelphia in order for the organization to get Neighborhood Advisory Committee status on Tuesday.  “We would partner with Mt. Airy USA,” Reichert said.  “It would allow us to enhance our current services.” Neighborhood Advisory Committee status allows non-profit organizations the opportunity to lead and engage neighborhood residents in activities that support the city’s core objectives. Those objectives include promoting sustainability through recycling, creating employment opportunities, enhancing neighborhood safety and aiding with affordable and decent housing. “Hopefully, this will allow us to acquire more resources so that we can expand our services…

Rooming House Could Come to Mt. Airy

An Johnson Street resident is trying to turn one house into a seven-space short-term rental area.

A rooming house could be coming to Johnson Street, depending on what the East Mt. Airy Airy neighbors decide to do. Mt. Airy resident Pamela McHerrin appeared before EMAN at their February meeting to seek support for her proposal to turn a single-family home at 229 E Johnson Street into a rooming house with seven separate spaces for rent. Mcherrin, who has lived in the Johnson street area for 40 years, said she wanted to invest in a neighborhood that has seen a lot of vacancies in passing years. "I want to provide people with a clean, decent place to live," she said. "Something that is affordable." McHerrin said that she has been renting rooms for over a year at her 229 E Johnson house, and that her selection for tenants came from word-of-…

EMAN Holding Steady Financially; John Chaney Becomes Member

The organization has run a $200 deficit so far this year.

East Mt. Airy Neighbors organization is doing fine financially, according to its treasurer, and has run a $200 deficit over the course of the first eight months of 2012. Treasurer Dutch Klugman said that number isn't bad news for the organization. There are some challenges, though, when it comes to sustaining its financial status. The upcoming Cookin' With Who? fundraiser should help, according to Klugman. Last year's event brought in $1,000, and he said he hopes this year's brings in even more. Close to 50 new memberships have come in through EMAN's latest drive. One of them is from former Temple University basketball coach John Chaney. Board member Elvira Evans said she recently ran into Chaney at a farmers' market. The two, she said, …

The organization is trying to recruit volunteers.

At the meeting, board president Kent Reichert said it's important to educate people throughout the neighborhood even more about needing to bring ID to the polls. "We have a lot of elderly people in the district," Reichert said. "They should know what's required." Reichert said people who want to volunteer at polling places can contact EMAN as well. Volunteers can also assist in the Voter ID effort before the election. Board member Elvira Evans said she has been doing work on this issue as well. She was recently at a meeting at New Courtland (a senior center) on Germantown Avenue…
