'We're Still Fighting' for NW Schools, Councilwoman Says

Councilwoman Cindy Bass spoke about the closing of Germantown High School at a civic meeting in January.

With the future of Germantown High School and 36 other city schools still up in the air, councilwoman Cindy Bass told the Chew-Belfield Neighbors Club that she "still fighting" to keep her district's schools from closing. "We know the financial situation for the school district is bad," she said. "We understand that some schools might have to close, but let's do what makes sense." Citing concerns about neighborhood violence and children walking long distances outside of their neighborhoods, Bass said that she favored finding alternative solutions to closing neighborhood schools outright, including the possibility of using existing buildings to house several elementary schools at the same time. "We want to revitalize our commercial corridor…

Weavers Way Celebrates Renovations, Expansion

The co-op held a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Congressman Chaka Fattah and Council Member Cindy Bass

“All right. And now there’s cake!” announced Weavers Way Communications Director Jon McGoran after three longtime members officiated the co-op’s reopening via giant scissors. The Mt. Airy location of Weavers Way was closed for nearly two months this summer as it underwent renovations for energy efficiency and aesthetics. Although the co-op has been back in business since early September, the ribbon was cut Saturday by Vivian Schatz, Dorothy Guy and Sylvia Carter at a ceremony featuring local politicians, music and food. Tents on Carpenter Lane offered free sno-cones, fresh-squeezed apple cider, ice cream, a variety of bacons, two cakes (one of them vegan), pork and meatballs. A band called Rumpus shifted through American folk, Irish folk …

Cindy Bass Calls City Council Hearing on Crime in Philadelphia Parks

On August 16, a City Council public hearing addressed citizens' and officials' concerns on rising crime in parks.

8th District Councilwoman Cindy Bass, Mt. Airy resident and chair of City Council’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, is using the summer recess to highlight the problem of increasing violence and crime in Philadelphia parks and recreation centers. Bass was instrumental in bringing about a public City Council hearing on the issues last Thursday. The Philadelphia Parks Alliance notes that “emotions were high” at the meeting, in which the Parks Alliance cited a report by the US Department of Justice that cutting funds for park staffing and maintenance only leads to more problems, as disused and poorly maintained spaces become a haven for drug use, public sex, vandalism, graffiti and other more serious crimes. Attending …

A Presidential Introduction For Cindy Bass

Bass spoke before President Obama at a fundraiser Tuesday.

Councilwoman Cindy Bass has supported President Obama since he was a senator from Illinois. On Tuesday, she got the opportunity to speak ahead of him at a fundraising event. The president was in town at the Franklin Institute to raise money for his campaign. Bass spokesman Joseph Corrigan said the councilwoman had been in touch with Obama's campaign on various issues lately, which has put her on his radar screen. "She has helped as much as she can," Corrigan said. Bass found out Thursday that Obama would be coming to the city, and it was then that the campaign asked her if she would speak. She will serve as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in August. Stay tuned for a copy of Bass' speech at the Franklin Institute.
