Community Association Considers New Events

The Chestnut Hill Community Association will consider new events, like a Soapbox Derby, to increase membership.

Last month, the Chestnut Hill Community Association passed a balanced budget for 2013, but in order to do that, it had to take $23,000 from the Chestnut Hill Local’s profits to cover the association’s deficit as a whole. When the budget measure passed, the Association promised the Local that it would work on new fundraising plans to return the money used to balance the budget. At last Thursday’s Community Association meeting, the board started preliminary discussions about what new fundraising measures could be taken. “We as a board need to come up with fundraising that will cover the $23,000,” said association president Brien Tilley.  “We need to act now, not six months from now.” Several board members made suggestions about events the …

Herbiary Withdraws Variance Request

The Herbiary will no longer teach classes starting in June.

Herbiary operator Andrew Celwyn told the Chestnut Hill Community Association Board on Thursday night that he would not continue to seek a zoning variance for his business located at 133 East Mermaid Lane. Celwyn added that classes will no longer be taught at that location starting in June. Neighbors on either side of the property strongly objected to the property’s use as a classroom. The Chestnut Hill Board voted unanimously to reject a zoning variance that would allow the business to continue operating, but president Brien Tilley said that the board would be willing to work with the residents to find an acceptable use. “It was not our intention to be contentious,” Tilley said.  “And we are sorry to hear that this is the course of action …

The store located on 133 East Mermaid Lane will once again seek a use variance from the Chestnut Hill Community Association.

The Chestnut Hill Community Association will once again hear a use variance plea from the Herbiary located at 133 East Mermaid Lane.   The board previously shot down a variance that would allow Herbiary to continue teaching classes in a garage on the property in February, but the group will appear before the board on Thursday hoping to get a variance to continue teaching their classes.  Besides the Herbiary plea, the board is also scheduled to update the public on its strategic plan, brief on fundraising and membership initiatives and hear officer reports. Community Association to Discuss Tax-Exempt Status

The Chestnut Hill Community Association will discuss changes to its tax status on Thursday.

The Chestnut Hill Community Association will discuss the possibility of seeking tax-emempt status and becoming a 501-C3 on Thursday. The Community Association faced a budget deficit of $23,000 this year even though they had funds available to cover that deficit in the Chestnut Hill Community Fund. Because the Community Fund is a tax-exempt organization it could not be used to fund the operations of the Community Association, which is not a tax-exempt body. Several members of the community association suggested becoming a 501-C3 in order to avoid budget problems like the one faced this year in the future.
