Weavers Way Celebrates Renovations, Expansion

The co-op held a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Congressman Chaka Fattah and Council Member Cindy Bass

“All right. And now there’s cake!” announced Weavers Way Communications Director Jon McGoran after three longtime members officiated the co-op’s reopening via giant scissors. The Mt. Airy location of Weavers Way was closed for nearly two months this summer as it underwent renovations for energy efficiency and aesthetics. Although the co-op has been back in business since early September, the ribbon was cut Saturday by Vivian Schatz, Dorothy Guy and Sylvia Carter at a ceremony featuring local politicians, music and food. Tents on Carpenter Lane offered free sno-cones, fresh-squeezed apple cider, ice cream, a variety of bacons, two cakes (one of them vegan), pork and meatballs. A band called Rumpus shifted through American folk, Irish folk …

Fattah On-Hand at NASA for Mars Landing

Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California hosts Philadelphia congressman.

When the rover Curiosity landed on Mars Monday, U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah was front and center with NASA. The congressman for Roxborough-Manayunk, Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy was a guest at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, when the rover safely touched down on the red planet Monday morning to begin a two-year exploratory journey of Mars' surface.  Fattah is the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees funding for NASA. After the landing, the congressman released this statement: “NASA has always been a model of public and private partnering—our brightest home-grown entrepreneurs and innovators working hand in hand with our government to push back …

At Issue: Will Fattah Challengers Be Allowed on the Ballot?

Newspaper publisher Jim Foster wants to run as well.

There appears to be some confusion over whether a couple of challengers to Rep. Chaka Fattah will be allowed to officially take him on. Jim Foster, who is the publisher of the Germantown Newspapers chain nearby, attempted to file to run, but was then told he couldn't, according to an Inquirer article. That's because, he said, he was told that another person with a similar name had filed to run as an independent as well, and state law prohibits two candidates with similar names from running as part of the same party. Foster said that's ridiculous. "I am the antithesis of a party," said the 69-year-old Germantown newspaper editor. "I am an independent political person, and I want to run that way." Robert J. Ogborn filed to run the day before…

Fattah Talks Education, Small Businesses at Press Event

The congressman also talked about some of the brain research legislation he cares about.

To hear Rep. Chaka Fattah tell it, there are several simple solutions for solving a variety of problems that pervade American life, both locally and nationwide. In order to help local economies, for example, more people need to open businesses in areas where they live. To save schools, districts should take what is working in successful programs and apply those methods to institutions that are having problems. And to combat manufacturing losses, we need to focus on keeping the jobs we have, instead of fretting about the ones we've already lost. Fattah made those assertions during a press event organized by his office called "Chat and Chew," which is intended to give the congressman a chance to speak with members of the media over lunch. …

Fattah Calls Wells Fargo Settlement 'Major Victory'

Congressman responds to discrimination case against bank.

Supporting one of the Justice Department's largest rebukes of predatory lenders, U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-2) called a $175 million settlement a significant win. “The $175 million settlement with Wells Fargo, one of the nation’s largest lenders, is an indication that aggressive investigation can result in justice for those victimized by patterns of discrimination on the basis of race or national origin," the congressman said in a statement. “Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice have achieved a major victory today in the on-going effort to hold predatory home mortgage lenders accountable. And the battle to right the wrongs of this national disgrace will continue." Wells Fargo has local branches on Ridge Avenue in …

Fattah, Nutter Bring More Cops to Philly

Congressman and mayor announce $3.125 million for Philly Police with attorney general.

With the help of $3.125 million from the federal government, Philadelphia will add 25 police officers over the next three years, the U.S. Attorney General announced Monday. In a joint press conference with U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-2), Mayor Michael Nutter and other congressional officials, Attorney General Eric Holder said Philadelphia would receive money from the U.S. Department of Justice as part of its COPS program, which will distribute $111.2 million nationally. The money funds nearly all salary and benefits for the new officers over the next three years. The COPS hiring program requires that all funded positions must be filled by recent military veterans who have served at least 180 days since 9/11. “The Department of Justice’s COPS…

Why Are Co-ops Now in the News More Often?

Councilwoman Cindy Bass and Rep. Chaka Fattah have both supported them recently.

Both Councilwoman Cindy Bass and Rep. Chaka Fattah have been spending a lot of time focusing on co-ops lately. Bass introduced a resolution that is intended to promote "the economic and social virtues of the cooperative style of business." Fattah has talked a lot about co-ops as well. He introduced a bill to support them in December, and he visited a forum on co-ops Tuesday in Philadelphia. The forum was conducted by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Regional Community and Economic Development Forum. Fattah was there, essentially, to talk about the bill that he introduced. He left with some Weavers Way Co-op swag, as you can see in the photo at right. So why all the attention on co-ops? Weavers Way, in particular, has been…
