AVI Home Values Explained at Panel

The Chestnut Hill Community Association is holding its second AVI panel. In this installment, city officials will explain how homes in the Northwest have been valued.

At the Chestnut Hill Community Association's first Actual Value Iniative and real estate tax panel - a panel that included a number of city council members and city officials - many residents asks the same question, a question they couldn't quite get an answer to. The question: How is my home going to be valued under AVI? What method is being used to decide its worth? That question should be answered at the CHCA's second AVI and Real Estate Tax panel on Feb 12. The second discussion will feature the city's chief assessor from the Office of Property Assessment, Richie McKeithen, and the deputy administrator for assessment programs and policy, Marisa Waxman, who will discuss the process used to find the value of the city's homes. CHCA Target Bass, Oh, Greene for AVI Panel

The Chestnut Hill Community Association is in talks with several city council members for a panel to educate citizens on how AVI could impact the area.

The Chesntut Hill Community Association continues to talk about bringing in Philadelphia's city council members to talk to residents about the city's AVI plan. At the CHCA's meeting in late September, association president Brien Tilley said they were still looking in to "creating a panel that would provide a wealth of knowledge" to residents about the city's plan to assess property taxes through Mayor Nutter's proposed Actual Value Initiative. "We've reechoed out to several different people who wanted to be part of it," Tilley said. He said that city council members Cindy Bass, Bill Greene and David Oh have all expressed interest in participating in the proposed panel. A date and location for the event is still forthcoming, but Tilley said…

An editorial quibble: This has to be one of the most cryptic headlines I've read recently. AVI isn't spelled out until the third paragraph. Out of context, "Bass, Oh, Greene" isn't explained until the fifth paragraph, which says they've "expressed interest in participating." So where does "target" come from?   more ›

Meet Brien Tilley, CHCA Board President

Tilley talks about coming to Chestnut Hill, what he sees in the future, and what it's like working in a connected community.

Chestnut Hill Community Associaton Board President Brien Tilley sat down with Patch to talk about life on the hill. How did you come to Chestnut Hill?: "I moved to Chestnut Hill in July 2000 after growing up in the northeast. My wife, then fiance and I were looking to buy a house and we realized that we spend most of our time in Chestnut Hill, so if this is where we want to be, then this where we should live." What attracted you to the neighborhood?: "We liked the sense of community, the Avenue and all the resources that are here. We wanted to be able to walk to the park, the arboretum, the museums: it fit the lifestyle we were looking for, but it still offers a city experience. We can be downtown in 15 minutes. If we want, we can ride our…

CHCA Wants to Focus on Connections, Engagement

Brien Tilley talks about the CHCA's goals.

When Brien Tilley became the president of the Chestnut Hill Community Association Board of Directors in late May, he didn't necessarily come in with a specific agenda. "I didn't really have platform of issues I wanted to get done when I first came in," he said. "What I wanted to concentrate on is really enhancing the brand of the CHCA." For Tilley, the future of the CHCA is tied to the board's ability to interact with residents and bring in new volunteers to assist with the events that make up "the fabric of the community." "I'm not saying we need a pat on the back, but there are so many terrific things that the board gets done," he said. "I mean, from things like the Black and White gala to blood drives, from the holiday House Tour to …
