No Swearing at Merion’s U.S. Open

Thousands of people will be pouring into and around the Main Line for the U.S. Open. Find out how area businesses are taking part and how you can too.

The nation’s golf spotlight will turn to Haverford Township next month when the U.S. Open comes to the Merion Golf Club. The 2013 U.S. Open runs June 10 through June 16 at the Merion Golf Club. Those of you who are familiar with the club know that there is not much parking in the area, so people are being bused in from two remote parking lots, one at PPL Park in Chester and the other from Rose Tree Park in the Media area, so the crowds won’t be confined to the immediate Merion area. If you’re heading to the event, or even if you’re not, you may be surprised by some of the rules set up by the United States Golf Association, which include the item that you can get thrown out for “making rude, vulgar, or other inappropriate comments or …

Cecily Tynan Among Philly Runners Seeing Red

Philadelphia's runners are showing support for Boston with their socks during the Broad Street Run.

Participants in the Broad Street Run are planning to show their support for the city of Boston. From the City of Brotherly Love, one popular way to show the love is apparently through one's socks. According to a recent Philly Mag blogger, and a Facebook group that has more than 1,000 members, many area sporting good stores are stocking up on red socks. Those participating in the Broad Street Run, slated for Sunday, May 5, are planning to wear red running socks to show the love for Boston. Get it? Red ... Sox ... Runner and Action News meteorologist Cecily Tynan told her Twitter followers this weekend, "Tried out my red compression socks in a tempo run 2day. Test everything out b4 race day!" If you're wondering where she got her pair, she …

Oh I doubt very much that she's a fool. I think you're jealous of her success or have some other issue. You call her names and say you know her. She's a hard working meteorologist and wife and mother of 2 who finds time to train for 10 mile races. It's easy to call famous successful people names   more ›

Broad Street Run Bans Backpacks for 2013 Race

Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.

Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Oh stop with the over dramatization of things regarding bags. My god the event is not just like many of the other races around the country. It's much more compact then Boston and has more participants. What a bunch of whiners.   more ›

Philly-Area NBA Players Tweet Support for Gay Colleague

Jason Collins is the first active player in a major U.S. sport to announce he is gay.

Many NBA players, including several with Philadelphia-area ties, reacted supportively after fellow player Jason Collins announced Monday in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he is gay. Collins, who is the first athlete in a major American sport to come out of the closet during his playing career, got an early supporter in NBA star, and Lower Merion High School grad, Kobe Bryant. At 11:01 a.m., little more than an hour after the revelation, Bryant tweeted this to his two-million plus followers: Proud of @jasoncollins34. Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others #courage #support #mambaarmystandup #BYOU The message has since been retweeted more than 31,000 times.  Also supporting Collins was the Philadelphia 76ers' …

hopefully you're using the word "preference" in the sense of "sexual preference" not "choice..." watching basketball is a choice... being gay is not (unless the person in question is bisexual, in which case, they do have a choice)... i too look forward to the day when this sort of thing doesn't bear announcing, but it was a very courageous move on Mr. Collins's part to be the FIRST current major …   more ›

Signed sports memorabilia from Carl’s Cards, $100 from Wayne Sporting Goods and Grand Slam batting cage time go to the winner.

Congratulations to Kelly Hutchinson, of Wayne, chosen by Patch’s users as the Greatest Baseball Fan 2013. The race was tight and Little League pictures were popular among our users. "The photo was taken at Lower Perkiomen Little League field on July 9 last summer at the District 27 Championships Devon Strafford vs. Upper Providence," Hutchinson told TE Patch. In it, her son Eric is celebrating a big win after a game in which he hit a home run. He's being lifted by players from the previous year's DSLL team, which also won the district championship. Eric roots for the Phillies, and his favorite players are Chase Utley and Cutter Dykstra, son of former Phillie Lenny Dykstra. Read more on TE Patch. Hutchinson was presented Monday with the …
