Study: More Red Lights Are Run on Memorial Day

Nationally, the Memorial Day weekend travel period sees the most red-light violations, according to a study.

Though the Greater Philadelphia area bucks the trend, the Memorial Day travel period was named "the most dangerous for intersection safety in 2011," according to a study from the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR).

Across the country, over 26,000 red light violations took place between Friday and Monday during Memorial Day weekend in 2011, nearly 1,000 more violations than during the Fourth of July travel period and almost 7,000 more than during the Christmas travel season.

While the Memorial Day numbers might be highest nationally, it is a different story locally. In the Greater Philadelphia area, 892 red-light violations were observed during Memorial Day weekend 2011, the lowest number of violations for any holiday period observed by the study.

The study supports red-light cameras, saying that they could lead to "more careful and courteous drivers."

"All the data points to a clear conclusion: there is no time on the road when you a re not at risk of encountering a red-light violator," the study says. "Fewer red-light violations will mean … fewer injuries and deaths due to someone's reckless decision to run a red light.”
