Sports Round-up: Win Some, Lose Some

Each Saturday, Patch details the local sports results for the previous week.

If Donald Trump was handing out personalized “I’m very proud of myself” awards then I nominate Dan Rosenbaum, the ace of Chestnut Hill Academy’s baseball team who kept visiting Haverford School’s bats in check for the better part of six innings in Tuesday’s Inter-Ac League showdown helping the Blue Devils clinch a 7-4 win allowing them to maintain their first place status.

In six innings of work, Rosenbaum, a righty, allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. At the plate, he went 2-for-3 with a walk. His RBI double in the fourth helped CHA go up 7-1.

The Blue Devils held on to win despite giving up three runs in the seventh.

Rosenbaum, who also plays third base, was helped out by Dan Hull, who drove in two runs on a double in the third, and Matt Primavera, who plated two runs in the fourth on a single.

Just a day later, though, CHA suffered a setback in the form of a 9-4 loss to non-league foe Friends Central. Cameron Stimpson (2-for-4) drove in six runs for Friends Central and set the tone with a grand slam in the bottom of the first. Matt Kozemchak went 2-for-3 with an RBI for CHA.

Stimpson picked up the win. Greg Kozemchak was tagged with the loss.

With the loss, CHA dropped to 15-2 overall (3-0 Inter-Ac League).

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Germantown Friends School’s baseball team had a case of the old Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome this past week. On Tuesday, the Tigers smoked Moorestown Friends, 17-2, in a game that only lasted five innings, but on Monday they had just one hit in a 9-1 loss to Shipley.

Against Moorestown, junior first baseman/pitcher Gilman Myran went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Tyler Clauson-Wolf picked up the win. In four innings of work, he struck out five and walked four.

“S” is for Steal

Germantown High’s Tavio Thomas stole four bases in Germantown’s mercy rule 13-3 win over Bartram in Tuesday’s Philadelphia Public League Division C baseball matchup. Thomas went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Out in the field, Germantown hurler Manny Castellanos surrendered just three hits. He walked seven batters and struck out 11.

Playing it Coll

Springside’s Brenna Coll certainly came to play in the Lions’ 17-7 win over host Baldwin in Tuesday’s Inter-Ac League softball contest. She went 3-for-3 with two doubles and knocked in five runs.

Coll was not the only Lion to have a big afternoon in the five inning affair. Aly Markey also went 3-for-3 with two doubles. Michelle Cybularz went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.

In total, the Lions cranked out 20 hits.

Also responsible for pitching, Cybularz picked up the easy win. She gave up seven runs on seven hits, five walks and two errors. She struck out two in the process.

The Lions improved to 6-3 overall.

Ouch

In the GFS softball team’s last two outings, the Tigers have been outscored 33-7. On Wednesday, Penn Charter sprinted to a 20-6 mercy rule win. PC belted out 13 hits while GFS committed five errors in the field. And then on Monday, Friends Central methodically tacked on run after run in a 13-1 mercy rule win.

Bear Attack

Ashley Hargraves knocked in three runs to lift the Germantown softball team to a 14-9 win over Fels in Tuesday’s Philadelphia Public League Silver Division action.

With the win, Germantown improved to 7-1 overall.

Nesia Simmons picked up the win. In seven innings, she struck out seven batters.

On Monday, Germantown took down Overbook, 15-0, in league action. Sydeny Bennett powered the Bears with two RBI. Simmons earned the win.

Tough Luck Losses

There’s no doubt that the Inter-Ac League features some of the toughest boys’ lacrosse competition in the Delaware Valley and coaches at CHA know that all too well. This past week, CHA lost to Inter-Ac nemesis Episcopal Academy, 9-3, on Tuesday and then fell to Princeton Day, 7-5, in Thursday’s non-league showdown.

The Blue Devils did beat up on Friends Central in a 14-3 non-league win last Thursday.

Close, but no cigar

Germantown Friends School’s girls’ lacrosse team came close to knocking off Shipley in Tuesday’s Friends School League clash, but the visiting Tigers came up short in the end.

The two squads were knotted at 4-4 at halftime, but Shipley’s Avery Safford’s goal with one minute, 10 seconds to go put the hosts ahead for good.

Iris Williamson powered GFS with a game-high six goals. Annie Morrissey added three goals. Lilly Tyson finished with two while Isabella Didio and Lyles Swift-Farley each notched one.

On the same day, Baldwin battled past Springside to win the Inter-Ac League contest 19-11. The Lions only trailed 8-6 at the break.

Faster than a speeding bullet

As of Sunday, Springside’s Taylor Ellis-Watson was the fastest sprinter in track and field for Pennsylvania high school girls in the 100-meter (12.2 seconds), 200 (24.13 seconds) and 400 (56.10 seconds).

In the 100, she broke a school record at last Saturday’s Colonial Classic meet at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School by clocking in at 12.2 seconds. She did the same in the 200 with a time of 24.13.

Natalia Bates also had a big showing at last Saturday’s meet. The senior took third in the 300 hurdles with a new school record time of 46.90. She tied a school record with her jump of four feet, 10 inches in the high jump, which was good enough for seventh place.

Ashlee Hale finished fifth in the shot put competition with a throw of 30-2.5. The week before, at the Wissahickon Invitational, Hale set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 73-5.

Jamie McGinn placed fifth in the triple jump at the Colonial Classic with a mark of 33-7.25, which set a new school record.

At the same meet, CHA’s Dustin Wilson had to settle for second in the 1,600. Last year, Wilson took first and set a meet record with a time of 4:20.27, but this year he finished in 4:23.45 while Wissahickon’s Hong Cho set a new record with a first place time of 4:20.18. Wilson’s teammate Mike Fuery took seventh.

CHA’s Colin Kelly placed fourth in the shot put.

At the Central Bucks West Relays, GFS’ sprint medley relay won first with a time of 3.32.67. Its 4x200 relay also took first by clocking in at 1:31.90.

Middle School Report

Springside’s middle school track and field team upped its record to 4-0 on Monday with a 54-23 win over Friends Central.

Alana Jing-White won the 400 (1:05.9), the long jump (12-6) and placed third in the high jump (4-4).

Ayana Rhym took first in the 110 hurdles (20.2) and finished second in the 100 and 800. Singley Riscio won the 100 with a time of 13.5 seconds while Marina Tomlinson took third in the 800.

Springside’s 4x100 relay, made up of Jordan Stahl, Rhymn, Calder McNeil and Riscio, claimed first with a time of 57.7 seconds.

Olivia Byron won the shot put competition with a mark of 26-1.

Sophia Haegley (100 hurdles), Brooke Hanraty (1,600), Amirah Lewis (shot put) and Byron (high jump) earned second place points for the Lions.

Isabelle Zabriskie (100 hurdles), Brenna Isackman (1,600), McNeil (400) and Stahl (long jump) had third place finishes for Springside too.
