Sports Round-up: Playoff Hopes

We take a look at the local sports action this week.

“Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” -Andy Dufresne, The Shawshank Redemption

With the playoffs right around the corner, local players are doing all they can to hold onto their playoff hopes.

Germantown Friends School’s Ben Rogers certainly did all he could in Thursday’s baseball action against the George School. Rogers went 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored helping the Tigers win 15-0 in a mercy rule game that lasted just five innings.

Rogers and Conor Biddle each hit a double helping GFS improve to 6-5 overall (4-3 Friends School League).

The Tigers did not have the same sort of luck on Tuesday, though, in a 9-8 loss against league foe Friends Select, a game in which they made a staggering six errors. Clauson-Wolf was tagged with the loss.

And then last Saturday, the Tigers fell to visiting Shipley, 11-5. Ryan Henry powered Shipley with a three-run home run in the second. Tigers’ pitcher Nick Rittler took the loss. Sam Rogers hit a double for GFS; Gilman Myran hit a triple.

Keeping pace

Dan Rosenbaum struck out 12 batters leading Chestnut Hill Academy to a 3-1 win over Germantown Academy in Tuesday’s Inter-Ac League baseball showdown. Rosenbaum allowed just one run on three hits. He didn’t surrender a run. G.A.’s Luke Reilly took the loss.

Matt Primavera sparked CHA’s offense by going 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Rosenbaum helped himself out by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Matt Rowland also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the Inter-Ac.

Bear Sighting

In a wild 15-11 Philadelphia Public League Division C win over Mastbaum on Monday, Germantown’s baseball team cranked out 14 hits.

Kendall Stewart went 3-for-3 for the Bears with a pair of doubles, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Thomas Boyd went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Boyd also had a stolen base.

Bears’ ace Manny Castellanos picked up the win helping Germantown improve to 5-4.

Germantown’s win on Monday follows a crucial 12-11 win over Southern in last Friday’s league match up, a game in which Clinton Hickson played the part of hero. In the bottom of the seventh with his team trailing 11-10 and with one out, Hickson ripped a two-run single to clinch the win for the locals.

Castellanos picked up the win again. In five innings of relief work, he gave up three hits and three walks while striking out four.

Tough breaks

Agnes Irwin and Springside each had 13 hits in Monday’s Inter-Ac League softball game, but the Lions were the ones that came up short in the end in a 19-11 loss.

Michelle Cybularz was tagged with the loss for Springside (6-4 overall, 3-3 Inter-Ac League).

Last Friday, the Lions nearly took down Penn Charter, but the Quakers had other ideas and held on to win, 8-4. Cybularz was charged for the loss in that game too. She gave up eight runs on nine hits and three walks.

Cybularz and Alexis Giovinazzo each hit a triple in the game. Both Giovinazzo and Asha Dean went 2-for-4 against winning pitcher Jess Drossner.

Speaking of rough, GFS’ softball team lost, 12-5, to Academy of New Church, in Monday’s league action and was shutout by Westtown’s Justine Lohrey in a 9-0 league game last Friday.

GFS pitcher Anita Thachet took the loss in both games.

Against ANC, Maddie Andrews went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Great Scott

In Germantown’s 20-10 Philadelphia Public League Silver Division win over Kensington on Wednesday, Jenae Scott went 3-for-4 and hit two homers. She drove in six runs all together. Nesia Simmons picked up the win.

In Monday’s league game, CAPA got the best of the Bears as Germantown fell short in the end, 18-14.

Bouncing Back

Playing outside of the Inter-Ac League, CHA’s boys’ lacrosse beat up on Conwell Egan on Wednesday in a 13-1 win and crushed Springfield Township High, 13-3, on Monday.

Swift as a Tiger

The GFS girls’ lacrosse team destroyed Moorestown Friends in Wednesday’s league game and won, 15-4.

Lyles Swift-Farley tallied six goals and an assist in the win for the Tigers (7-6 overall, 4-1 Friends School League). Iris Williamson added four and Lilly Tyson finished with a hat trick to go along with her four assists. Annie Morrissey and Isabella Didio notched one goal apiece. Didio, Caryn Miller and Eve Maxson were each credited with an assist.

GFS lost to West Chester Henderson, 10-4, last Saturday, but did beat Westtown, 16-4, last Friday behind a balanced attack. Williamson and Sophie Mercuris each netted three goals. Tyson, Morrisey and Hannah Drake scored two goals apiece while Swift-Farley, Caroline Myran, Claire Schmidt and Lydie McKenze each scored one goal. Morrissey also had four assists.

On Monday, Springside lost, 14-7, to Agnes Irwin. It was the Lions second loss to Agnes Irwin this season.

Germantown and Germantown Friends also competed in the 117th running of the Penn Relays.

Middle School Report

On Tuesday, Springside’s middle school track and field team edged Sandy Run Middle School, 39-38.
