Sports Round-up: Ellis-Watson, Wilson Shine at Leagues and States

This week's Sports Round-up shines a spotlight on track and field results from local schools.

There’s fast and then there’s Springside’s Taylor Ellis-Watson, who turned in four brilliant performances at Wednesday’s Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association Championship Meet at The Hill School.

Ellis-Watson broke meet records in the 100-meter dash, the 200, the 400 and helped break a meet record in the 4x400 relay.

Her efforts helped the Lions impressively finish second overall with 88 points, just two points shy of Episcopal Academy’s 90 total points. Notre Dame finished in third place with 84 points.

The Lions’ 4x400 relay (Toni Hall, Natalie Bates, Jamie McGinn, Ellis-Watson) clocked in at 4:03.31 to earn top honors and break the meet record.

On the track, Bates won a silver medal in the 300 hurdles with a new school record time of 46.02. In the field, her leap of 5-feet broke a school record and earned her a bronze. She placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 85-4.

Ashlee Hale had a big day in the field too. She won gold in the shot put with a throw of 30-8. She also finished second overall in the javelin with a school record mark of 101-2 and third in the discus with a school record mark of 79-4.

In addition to her efforts in the 4x400 relay, McGinn also won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a combined leap of 32-6.

Ellis-Watson named MVP at Inter-Ac Championships

Ellis-Watson brought her ‘A’ game to last Saturday’s Inter-Ac Championship Track and Field Meet, hosted by Penn Charter, as she broke two individual meet records, one individual school record and helped break a school record in the 4x400 relay.

So with all that said, it was no surprise that Ellis-Watson was named the MVP of the girls’ meet. She received the same honor as a freshman.

Overall, the Lions finished in a tie for third place with 77 points. Notre Dame took top honors with 109 points.

Ellis-Watson clocked in at 12.50 seconds to take first in the 100-meter dash. Her first place times of 24.53 in the 200 and 54.91 in the 400 were both meet records. Her 400 time was also a new school record.

In the 4x400 relay, Springside’s foursome of Hall, Bates, McGinn and Ellis-Watson earned gold with a new school record time of 4:02.71. Ellis-Watson anchored the relay with a red hot split time of 53.7.

Bates also had a big day. Her time of 46.80 in the 300 hurdles and her mark of 16-feet, 3 ¼ inches both set new school standards and were both good enough for third place finishes. She placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

In the shot put competition, Hale’s mark of 33-0 landed her a gold medal and a place in Springside’s record books. Caitlin Sirianna finished sixth overall with a throw of 24-9.

McGinn won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a mark of 32-9.

Jamie Costarino broke Springside’s school record in the 3,200 race with a time of 11:53.17, which was good enough for fourth place. She took sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:26.45.

Springside’s 4x100 relay earned sixth place with a time of 59.38.
