Chestnut Hill Teen Takes Talents to Carnegie Hall

Jordan Wang, a senior at Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy, recently played viola with an orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York—only to drive back home and compete in a wrestling tournament the next day.

Wang was selected to play at the “The American Christmas Carol” concert at Carnegie Hall. He was part of a 90-member orchestra that accompanied Grammy award-winner Sarah McLachlan, internationally acclaimed singer/song writer Loreena McKennitt, multi-platinum selling Irish singer Andrea Corr, and classical crossover sensation Hayley Westenra.

"Jordan devoted approximately 40 hours of rehearsal time prior to this amazing concert. This included rehearsals on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and a five-hour sound check prior to the concert," Kim Eberle-Wang said. "Jordan was given the opportunity to perform with both student and professional musicians in this orchestra because he was also a member of the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s PMEA District 12 Orchestra in 2012."

The performance was a benefit concert for The Golden Hat Foundation, an organization founded by actress Kate Winslet. The nonprofit is dedicated to providing children with autism exceptional creative and educational opportunities to all them to express themselves to their fullest potential.

After finishing the concert, Wang returned to Philly for compete with his high school at the Germantown Academy Wrestling Tournament the next morning on three hours of sleep. Wang is currently being recruited by Davidson College in North Carolina for Division I wrestling.
