Changing Lineup Working for Springside Chestnut Hill Football

The team shut out Episcopal Academy this week.

Rick Knox is not adverse of changing things around during the season. The football coach made some strategic moves on defense that have solidified a unit that gave up 79 points the first three games of this season.

The Blue Devils shutout Episcopal Academy, 7-0, and have surrendered a measly three points in their opening two Inter-Academic League games to move to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Knox particularly likes the way the middle of his defense is shaping up, with nose guard Tyler Hightower, middle linebacker Bobby Keyes, a converted strong safety, and Brett Flannery, an addition to the starting lineup against Monsignor Bonner the second game of the season.

“Brett doesn’t give up big plays, which was a problem the first weeks of the season,” Knox said. “Brett is a firm tackler, Bobby knows schemes and calls our defense, Tyler is 6-foot-1, 300 pounds, and a tough to move in the middle. All three are smart players that don’t make mistakes, make the right reads and we’re a better defense up the middle because of them. We’re not afraid to make moves like that. You have to look at your personnel and in our program here, we really look at the films and see who’s playing well. The past couple of years when we have made moves like that, we’ve put our kids in the right spot.”

Evidently, it’s happening again.
