Wissahickon Charter Groundbreaking Set for Monday

This will be the school's second campus.

The following was provided to Patch:

On Monday, November 18th at 10:00 AM Wissahickon Charter School and Mt. Airy, USA will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the school’s second campus. Confirmed guests include Representative Dwight Evans and Eighth District City Councilwoman Cindy Bass.

Wissahickon Charter School will replicate its program at this second campus beginning in fall 2014. This new campus will enable Wissahickon Charter School to close the achievement gap for up to 500 additional students, while enabling Mt. Airy, USA to transform a blighted parcel of land into an environmental village and by leveraging neighboring partners such as the Awbury Arboretum and Weaver’s Way community farm, establish a national model for an environmentally based K-8 public education.  Images of the new school will be displayed at the event so that attendees can see how this blighted parcel will look once the transformation is complete.

Wissahickon Charter School is a K-8 public charter school that focuses on the environment as an integrating theme for instruction. Wissahickon Charter prepares students to develop their own approaches to environmental problems, understand the real-world applicability of their learning, and become engaged citizens of the world beyond the classroom walls. The school presently serves 457 students from 35 zip codes across the city.
