Donna Reed Miller Expresses Concern for School Transportation Issues

The councilwoman says her daughter used district-funded transit while she went to school.

Transportation was one of the most talked about issues at a City Council hearing Tuesday held to discuss the School District of Philadelphia's budget.

TransPasses that older students use to get to their respective schools are being threatened, and buses for younger students are on the chopping block as well.

The transportation issue is one of the most important to Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller, who said in an interview Tuesday that her daughter attended a school that she traveled to using a district-funded transit method.

"If they cut the transportation out, what happens to schools like that? How do kids get to school?" Miller said in the corridors of City Hall.

Later, in the early portion of the afternoon hearing in front of council members, Miller asked council members about transportation measures. She also asked about what the district is doing to become more green.

Either way, Miller hinted that she would support giving additional funding to schools.

"Everybody wants to help the school district," Miller said.

Superintendent Arlene Ackerman said 1,200 teachers would be laid off as part of the district's budget plan. She has also said that close to 3,800 jobs would be cut.
