Chestnut Hill Downs Bonner To Pick Up First Win

The Blue Devils topped the Friars in a back-and-forth game.

NEWTON SQUARE—The football team defeated the Monsignor Bonner (1-1) Friars 27-21 on Saturday at Episcopal Academy. In a back-and-forth contest, the Blue Devils were able to pull away in the 4th quarter, scoring on a 49-yard rushing touchdown from Cedric Madden.

IN SHORT

In a game moved due to poor field conditions, Chestnut Hill (1-1) quickly fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter but would tie the game on a 35-yard rushing touchdown from Madden—one of four on the day. The Friars continued their offensive success in the second quarter, marching down the field for another touchdown. Once again, Chestnut Hill would match the Friars with a rushing touchdown of their own. However, Bonner's two-minute offense mastery paid dividends, resulting in a 4-yard touchdown pass with under 10 seconds on the clock, leaving Chestnut Hill trailing 21-14 at halftime.

In the second half, the Blue Devils defense came out strong. Chestnut Hill Academy would force three-and-out and a fumble on the following two Friar drives. The Blue Devils put together a long drive at the end of the third quarter, culminating in a early fourth quarter touchdown to tie the game. Once more, the defense would prevail, forcing and recovering another fumble. Madden's 49-yard rushing touchdown on 4th and 1 would seal the game for the Blue Devils and propel them to their first victory of the season.
