Recent Developments in the 8th District Council Race

Various allegations and denials have been flying around lately.

A variety of things—some dramatic, some more benign—happened in the 8th District City Council race this week. Here are some of the highlights:

Newsworks hosted a  on the race in Mt. Airy on Tuesday. Residents discussed what they'd like to see in a council member and came up with potential questions to ask the candidates. Bill Durham, Andrew Lofton, Greg Paulmier, Robin Tasco and Howard Treatman, who are all running, attended the event, while Verna Tyner and Cindy Bass did not.

- Tasco said someone from Bass's campaign made a threatening phone call to her telling her to get out of the race, according to Newsworks. Bass said she wasn't aware of anything that had taken place. Read the full story here.

- , a non-profit founded in 2004 that advocates for progressive candidates and ideas and that organizes itself by city wards, canceled a poll it had sent out to its members that was intended to help the organization endorse a candidate in the wake of Tasco's allegations. It said it will soon chart a course for what it will do next.

- Bass said she will make a major campaign announcement on Saturday at  in Mt. Airy. To do so, she will be joined by Congressman Chaka Fattah (who she currently works for), State Sen. Dwight Evans and Mayor Michael Nutter.

- Tyner said in a statement she was "surprised" to hear of Nutter's support for Bass but said she feels it "will do little to determine who will be the 8th District’s next representative in City Council."

- Current 8th District Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller, , alleged that police recently kicked Paulmier out of City Hall for unruly behavior after he asked for her endorsement, according to City Paper.

- Paulmier denied the allegations, according to Newsworks. In the meantime, he received endorsements from the Chestnut Hill Residents Association and the Americans for Democratic Action's Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter.

- Treatman said his campaign finance report shows $90,576.27 cash on hand, including $100,000 in loans from Treatman to the campaign and about $12,000 in expenditures.
