Philly Preps for Potential Friday Snow

With the National Weather Services forecasting up for 3 inches of snow for the city, Philly is getting ready for a winter storm.

Friday night, Feb 8, the Northwest is expecting to get anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Here's what you need to know before the snow hits:

You Should Have a Kit in Your Car: The city's Office of Emergency Management has a guide on how to create a snow kit for your car and what you should put in it. Some of the stuff is pretty standard (flashlight and batteries, jumper cables) while others are a little less conventional (I would personally think to put granola bars into a kit, for example. Check out their website for the full list of what should go into your weather kit.

You Should Probably Be Shoveling Your Block: The city's Emergency Management Office has a series of tips for shoveling and salting your property before, during and after a snow storm, but the main take away is this: if you don't shovel the sidewalk in front of your house, you could get a $300 fine from the city. Review the snow code here.

If You Have to Be on the Road, Be Careful: PennDOT has a winter driving guide available for download on its website (we've attached a copy to our story here, too.) Most of the information is common sense stuff, like slowing down, increasing following distance and avoiding roads that look wet or icy, but it couldn't hurt to review the tips.
