Local Parents Bake Up Protest at City Hall

Mock Bake Sale for Public Education set for April 12.

Parents and students in the have something cooked up for city lawmakers.

Part of a larger statewide protest, Philadelphia parents will hold a Mock Bake Sale for Public Education April 12 at City Hall.

"This bake sale isn't about selling cookies—no cookies will be sold. This event is about letting our elected officials know that our children's schools need to be fully funded," parent Rebecca Poyourow said in an email.

Organizers from PA Statewide Bake Sale for Public Education named the second week in April as the kickoff for the protest, and plan a march on Harrisburg.

Parents from around the city will hold their own event at Philadelphia City Council April 12. A few parents from are expected to attend.

"You cannot cut over $1 billion from the Pennsylvania basic education budget and depend on bake sales to fill the gap. Parents are fed up with our children's educations being systemically underfunded on the city and state level," Poyourow said.

Throughout this school year, parents from Cook-Wissahickon, and have protested cost-cutting measures from the city and state. Levering into the other schools; Shawmont has been outspoken ; and Cook-Wissahickon bemoaned —among others.

City parents, students and community members will meet at the northside of City Hall and hand-deliver cookies along with a message to City Council members starting at 2 p.m. Starting at 4 p.m., people will reconvene at the northside for a rally.

"Bring cookies in bags for our legislators, bring yourselves, bring kids, bring signs. Let them know cookies for corporations and crumbs for children is not an acceptable state of affairs," she said.
