Grant Dollars Available for Nonprofits

The Northwest Fund has $300,000 to give.

The Northwest Fund will soon give out a total of $300,000 in grants that are intended to help neighborhood groups build community and make their areas safer.

The fund, according to a news release, is a non-profit organization that works to support community groups in Northwest Philadelphia that help keep their neighborhoods safe. A congressional appropriation from the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah allowed the organization to receive the $300,000.

Now, the Northwest Fund will have the opportunity to give out the money. In the news release, it said it is "soliciting proposals from community organizations with programs that improve quality of life and reduce/prevent crime" in Mt. Airy and in a variety of other neighborhoods in the Northwest, including Chestnut Hill, Roxborough, Manayunk, Oak Lane, Nicetown, East Falls, Germantown and Olney.

The news release also says community organization that apply must focus their work on low-income communities within a neighborhood.

"The Northwest Fund believes employment and education are two key pillars of a healthy community, and when there is a dearth of these in a neighborhood, crime and violence are nearly always present," the news release says.

The grants are intended to support projects in the following general areas:

- Staying in school

- Employment/self-sufficiency

- Violence prevention and community improvement

Grants will be awarded individually in amounts up to $20,000 and cannot exceed 10 percent of an organization's budget.

Organizations that apply must have 501(c)(3) status or have another organization with 501(c)(3) status serve as a fiscal agent. They also must have an existing project that qualifies, though the release says news projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The fund is hosting a request for proposal information session Dec. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the offices at 6703 Germantown Ave. An RSVP is required, and to do so, email info@thenorthwestfund.org. Interested organizations must then submit a letter of intent by Jan. 5.
