All U.S. and state flags at commonwealth facilities will be flown at half staff on Thursday in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, Gov. Tom Corbett has announced.

The day honors the memory of law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

All Pennsylvanians are invited to join the government in honoring fallen officers by flying their own flags at half staff on Thursday.

Please remember: despite desires, U. S. flags can NOT be flown at unmanned facilities & homes. It's illegal, sadly including vol. fire.

Our town fire department always has someone in it so it is always manned and they do follow "Flag Rules".

NIce Thought BUT IMPROPER! LOOK UP 'MEMORIAL DAY'. It is ONLY FOR ARMED FORCES MILITARY who have given their lives for OUR "COUNTRY." Please do not take way the importance nor meaning of honoring the Military. Designate another day for fallen Police Officers if you wish....like BLUE LIGHT CEREMONY DAYS ETC. (Which by the way honor Police Officers who died but not always were killed e.g. died at their desk.) People seem to forget WHY things are done and make up their own rules about things! Starting this will result in other types of people who have died doing their job to be remember on Memorial Day. Keep this day for those it was intended. You can always designate other days for honoring other people. By the way, the public doesn't seem to know the Flag Regulations either. Isn't this taught in schools any more?

I feel awful about that man and hope his family is okay. But what's with the flag at half staff? That's an honor that should be reserved for major state or federal officials, Cripes, the flag is at half staff all the time anymore. .
