On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District will take a look back at the year that was, and according to BID Director Hollie Malamud-Price it was quite a year.
“We’re really proud of the lot clearing program that we got going through the Philadelphia Horticultural Society,” Malamud-Price said. “We’ve received grant money to clean and maintain 50 vacant parcels between Gorgas and Washington and from Germantown to Chew.”
Malamud-Price and the BID are also excited to have Alan Greenberger, the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Director of Commerce as the guest of honor at the organization’s annual meeting on Sept. 24.
“It’s a big deal,” Malamud-Price said. “It’s a great opportunity for business and property owners as well as members of the community to come and ask questions.”
Malamud-Price added, “He’ll also be talking about economic development. We’re thrilled and honored to have him.”
Besides the lot clearing program, Malamud-Price is also excited by the new park that sprang up on Germantown Avenue near the SEPTA depot in the 6700 block.
“We worked with SEPTA to clean that space, and the community planted and maintains the gardens there,” Malamud-Price said.
Malamud-Price added, “We’re working on adding some things that will make it more user friendly like a bench and a trash can. That way it can be a place where people can sit and maybe eat lunch or something.”
Malamud-Price also said that another the organization is looking forward to going forward is the Commercial Corridor Vision Initiative.
The BID will be teaming up with East Mt. Airy Neighbors, West Mt. Airy Neighbors and Mt. Airy USA to come up with a strategy for economic development in Mt. Airy.
“We’re going to work on a common vision and plan with regard to business mix,” Malamud-Price said. “This will be a multi-year initiative that we’re just now getting off the ground.”
The Mt. Airy BID’s annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on the New Covenant Church, 7500 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19119 in Grannum Hall (formerly called Founders Hall), Room B10. Parking is available in the Tech Parking Lot across from Grannum Hall.
