City Salting Streets Before Snow Falls

The following release comes from the Philadelphia Streets Department.

Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson urges all motorists and pedestrians to use caution on Philadelphia’s streets during Friday’s inclement weather, which is expected to invovle to wet snow and strong wind gusts during the evening rush hour with an accumulation of 1 to 6 inches later in the evening. 

Streets Department crews will mobilize throughout the city by 4:00 PM to salt roadways, and will monitor for snow and icy conditions throughout the evening, concentrating on primary roads, bridges and areas of high elevation where slippery spots develop.  

Citizens are also reminded to remove snow and ice from sidewalks to allow safe traveling for pedestrians. A cleared sidewalk provides a safe path for pedestrians and prevents them from having to walk in the street. A path of at least 36” wide on sidewalks is required within 6 hours of the end of a storm.  For owners of properties located on a corner, we request that you include a path to the curb cuts and not simply a path around the corner of the property.
 
Motorists should allow extra time and maintain safe driving distances.  With a combination of snow residuals and freezing temperatures, motorists must be alert for slippery road conditions. Motorists should also be mindful of pedestrians crossing streets.
 
Citizens are urged to employ the following tips for successful snow and ice management:

• Apply commercial de-icer to your stairs and sidewalks early to prevent icy conditions.
• Park your car as far from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner impede the turning radius of salting vehicles.
• Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors and all vehicle lights; State law requires removal of snow and ice from the hood and roof of vehicles.
• Check on sick and elderly neighbors.
• Stay tuned to local media for further updates for weather and traffic reports.
