City Council Comes to Agreement on Redistricting

Council members negotiated before Thursday's meeting to present a bill on the issue.

City Council members introduced a bill Thursday at their stated meeting.

The meeting was called to order nearly two hours late, as members worked behind closed doors to come to a compromise on preliminary district map. According to reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer, the key to the negotiation was the in Northeast Philadelphia.

The bill that contained the redistricting scenario was referred to a committee, and will come to public hearing sometime in the upcoming weeks.

The details of the proposed redistricting map have not yet been released. Both the , according to the 2010 U.S. Census data that was released in March of this year. There will likely be changes to these districts to more evenly distribute the population among the city’s 10 councilmanic districts.

The city charter gives Council until Sept. 22 for final passage of the the redistricting map, or else they will not receive their following paychecks until a bill is passed.
