Carriage Home Destroyed in Blaze Tuesday Morning

A fire engulfed a building containing a garage and apartment at 32 Summit St. Tuesday morning.

Smoke was visible from across town on Tuesday morning as flames engulfed a carriage home at 32 Summit St.

The Philadelphia Fire Department received the call at 10:25 on Tuesday morning, arriving at the scene at 10:33, according to Deputy Commissioner Ernest Hargett. It took 47 minutes to get the blaze under control with the efforts of Engine 66, Engine 9, Ladder 21 and Ladder 8.

The building was almost completely destroyed by the time the fire was put out, but damage was contained to the original building and did not spread to the other home on the property.

The occupants of the home self-evacuated before the fire department arrived, Hargett said. No one was injured directly by the fire, though one firefighter suffered a minor back injury.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the Fire Marshall is expected to release a cause later today or tomorrow, Hargett said.
