With an Ear to the East: The Role of “Eastern” Musical Influences on Israeli Culture

A 4-session course at Germantown Jewish Centre with Yosef Goldman

Begins Sunday, February 3, 10:30 AM – 12 Noon

In this course we will listen to a variety of Israeli music as a window into the formation of Israeli national culture and identity. In particular we will look at and discuss the powerful and sometimes problematic place of “Eastern” music (Jewish music from the Middle East and North Africa) in the canon of Israeli music from the 1920s through today.
