A Writing Retreat in the Woods

(PHILADELPHIA – September 27,
2013)   Writers of all experience levels
are invited to seek inspiration and hone their craft with a daylong retreat in
the woods at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Saturday,
October 5, 2013.  Published writers and
teachers from Musehouse: A Center for the Literary Arts will present a variety
of workshops on everything from memoir writing and haiku to bookmaking with
branches.

“Stories and poetry have always been a way for
people to express their connection to the natural world, and even illuminate
environmental issues,” says Gail Farmer, the Schuylkill Center’s director of
education.  “At the same time, the
serenity and beauty of the woods offers writers space to reflect and plenty of
inspiration.  We’re excited to partner
with the experienced authors and teachers at Musehouse for a day of exploring
art and nature.”

“A Writing Retreat in the Woods”
will feature morning and afternoon workshop sessions and a catered picnic
lunch.  Workshops include: “Six-Word
Memoirs” and a “Mary Oliver Read-Around” with Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno, author
of the best-selling poetry collection Slamming
the Open Door
and the director of Musehouse; “Outdoor Flash Fiction” with award-winning
author Randall Brown; and “The Art of Haiku” with naturalist and poet Jeff
Hoagland.
