Weekend Planner: Concerts and Poetry

A look at this weekend's events.

Here are events throughout Northwest Philadelphia this weekend:

Circus Week Encore at the Garden Railway
- Where/When:
Morris Arboretum, 100 E. Northwestern Ave., on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Why Go:
The first circus was held in Philadelphia in 1793.  Come see the Big Top and the circus trains, learn the history of the circus and watch for a few surprises.
- Pricing:
$16 adults, $14 seniors, $7 youth, student and active military, $7 hike/bike/SEPTA arrivals.

Summer Jazz on Fridays
- Where/When:
Little Treehouse Play Café, 10 W. Gravers Lane; Friday evening until 8 p.m.
- Why Go:
The Little Treehouse is offering evening jazz as a way to relax and enjoy the outdoors. This week Maplewood Music Studio presents Kami Mazzeo on piano.
- Pricing:
Free music; regular menu prices for food.

Moonlight Movies at
- Where/When:
Lovett library branch, 6945 Germantown Ave. (in the garden), on Friday from 8:30 to 11 p.m. Seating on the green begins at 8 p.m.
- Why Go:
See The Sandlot in a summer outdoor setting. The Trolley Car Diner will be vending some snacks and will donate a percentage to the library.
- Pricing:

Poetry Aloud and Alive
- Where/When:
, 551 Carpenter Lane, on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
- Why Go:
An open reading will follow a featured reader.
- Pricing:

E.J. Simpson of the Woods at Crossroads
- Where/When:
Crossroads Coffee House, 6156 Ridge Ave., on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m.
- Why Go:
The group plays at colleges, festivals, listening rooms and clubs in the U.S. and Europe. Their seven self-released CDs range from coffeehouse folk to rootsy rock & roll, country, jazz, pop and alternative rock.
- Pricing:

Seventh Anniversary Celebration & Back to School Revenge of the Nerds Party
- Where/When:
Kildare’s, 4417 Main St., on Thursday (Back to School party at 9 p.m.)
- Why Go:
Live Irish dancers, Irish music, and bagpipers, with great food and drink specials in honor of Kildare’s seventh birthday. Dress as a nerd for the back-to-school party and get half price drinks from 9 to 11 p.m. School supply donations will be accepted at the door.
