'Twin Bridges' Travel Restrictions Lifted

The span is a major regional thoroughfare.

PennDOT announced Tuesday that traffic restrictions over the Route 1 "Twin Bridges" have been lifted, as the rehabilitation of the bridges enters its final stage.

The restriction lifted as contractors began the two-month process of improving drainage under the bridge, which will not affect traffic.

According to a press release from Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller, the bridges, which carry 109,000 vehicles a day, have been under construction since March 2010. The funds for the project came entirely from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The construction has improved the strength of the dual span bridges, with projects such as resurfacing the concrete deck, performing concrete repairs on the abutments and piers, repairing and resurfacing the Route 1 ramps to I-76, repairing steel components and more.

Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $10,760,387 project, according to the release.
