Meeting Addresses Parking at East Highland and Anderson Intersection

The Chestnut Hill Community Association Traffic, Transportation and Parking Committee discussed the intersection at their meeting on Thursday.

The intersection of East Highland Avenue and Anderson Street was a topic of discussion Thursday night at the Chestnut Hill Community Association Traffic, Transportation and Parking Committee meeting.

Committee members and neighbors voiced concern over the parking situation and safety concerns at that intersection.  Committee chairman Tom Hemphill read a list of concerns from neighbors.  This list included the issue of parking on both sides of the street and the need for a four-way stop at the intersection.  Also on the list was the issue of the spillover of parking from area parking lots that were once free lots.

Mark Keintz, a neighbor and the Community Association’s representative to the Parking Foundation, brought up the issue that cars are parking too close to the corner on East Highland.  This creates a safety concern, as it blocks oncoming traffic from view of the drivers on East Highland.

Keintz also suggested the addition of signs on the left side of the street to restrict parking too close to the corner.

Neighbors at the meeting also asked for the addition of no parking signs near the alley that comes out to Anderson Street.  They noted that it is too difficult to see traffic when exiting the alley due to the parked cars.

The possibility of a four-way stop sign was also addressed.  While committee member Debbie Ferraro said that this is not likely to be granted by the Streets Department based on the standard qualifications, but that this intersection could be an exception.

The Committee pledged to contact the city and request the new parking signs and the four-way stop.
