Great Escapes: Pet Shops

Love your pets? Treat them here.

They’re waiting for you when you get home from work to shower you with kisses and affection. They are always up for an adventure. And snuggling. And they give you their best – so give them yours. Here are the best places to find new food, fun and friends for your pet.

– There aren’t many pet stores quite like Buzzy’s Bow Wow Meow. Tucked away off Narbeth’s main drag, Buzzy’s is a haven for pet owners and pet enthusiasts alike. PSPCA volunteers will often be found outside in nice weather with a handful of pups in “Adopt Me!” vests looking for new homes. One of the front doors is surrounded by snuggly, lounging cats from area shelters that are patiently waiting for a new home. And the staff is knowledge and friendly, with resources about everything from the healthiest dog food and safest toys to the best pet carriers and how-to books.
Address: 701 Montgomery Ave., Penn Valley, 19072

– Pets Plus is a great place to find the right food for your pet. Not only is the Conshohocken/Plymouth Meeting/Whitemarsh area home to the biggest Whole Foods in the region. Conshohocken is home to Pets Plus, a store with an enormous array of organic and natural foods for your pet. The products are sustainable and meet specific needs, from grain-free options to great deals on healthy treats. And with every purchase, a portion is donated to shelter in need.
Address: 200 West Ridge Pike, Conshohocken, 19428

– You may have seen this quick-growing pet chain in a number of places around the city, and for good reason. Doggie Style is a full-service pet store with a dozen locations in Philly. Get your pup groomed or saddle up for some training classes. Camp Dogwood is a great doggie daycare if you’re worried about your beloved pooch spending too much time alone at home. If you’ve always wanted a fashionable, healthy and fit dog, than you need to start taking your afternoon walks to Doggie Style.
Address: 4361 Main St., Philadelphia, 19127

– With the charm and warmth of many of Chestnut Hill’s stores, Bone Appetite is a great spot to splurge on your best friends. Bone Appetite is a niche store – not only do they have exclusive pet gear, like Buddy Belts harnesses from Canada, but the store will specially order food based on your dog’s size and breeds. There’s a number of natural foods and treats to choose from, and right out on Germantown Ave.
Address: 8505 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, 19118

PSPCA – It may not be a pet store, but there is nowhere better to meet that new friend for life than the many incarnations of the SPCA in the area. There are too many dogs and cats in the city and surrounding areas, and not enough homes. So if you love animals, do your part – volunteer at a shelter near you, run a newspaper or food drive, and remind your friends that there is no love quite like adopting. These pups and cats will thank you for it.
