Great Escapes: Farmers' Markets

'Tis the season - for produce! Check out these local spots for your fruits and veggies.

There is nothing quite like the snap of a fresh string bean, the crisp bite of a blueberry right off the bush, or the scent of a melon bursting with ripeness. The feeling of choosing you r own produce from a vast selection of fresh greens and fruit is a feeling that hits straight in the heart of any gardener, urban farmer or, really, any person who just loves food and can appreciate the good stuff. And sometimes the grocery store won’t cut it, especially in the summer. Thankfully, Northwest Philadelphia is chock full of farmer’s Markets this season. So grab some reusable bags, get outside and shop for some fresh, local produce.

Gorgas Park – The new McCann Farmers booth in has been touted across the neighborhood for its incredible strawberries, peaches, corn and other phenomenal fruits and vegetables. This farm stand is run by a dynamic pair of sisters who were raised on a farm just outside the city, and Roxborough and Manayunk neighbors have been their praises since the beginning of the season. This farmer’s market is a part of Philadelphia’s Farm to City program, which encourages Philadelphia residents to take advantage of organic and locally grown foods.
When: Fridays, 2 to 6pm

Mt. Airy Farmer’s Market – You don’t have to stray far from Germantown Ave. to find great fruits and vegetables. The Lutheran Theological Seminary is currently home to the Mt. Airy Farmer’s Market on Tuesday evenings. And, as an added bonus, Mt. Airy Patch editor Zach Subar has been posting based on the different produce available each week at the stands. Weavers Way Farm and Fruitwood Farms out of Monroeville, N.J. are satiating palettes across town with their delectable fruits and veggies.
When: Tuesdays, 3 to 7pm
Where: William Allen Plaza, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Germantown Ave. and W Allens Ave.

Chestnut Hill Farmer’s Market – You may not always want to go outside for your farmer’s market, and that’s okay. Thankfully, the is right up the hill and ready and waiting with produce, gelato, baked goods, meat, and all the good stuff an indoor, full-service farmer’s market it touted for. Stop in for some sushi, buy your groceries or grab a gourmet coffee on your way to work. There is a world of delicious eats at your fingertips, and with an accessible parking lot you can definitely fill your arms and go back for more.
When: Thursdays - Fridays, 9am to 6pm; Saturdays, 8am to 5pm

Chestnut Hill Flower and Garden – Though this store is open for more than just the summer, the houses a great little farmer’s market during the summer. Check out the fresh and mostly local potatoes, tomatoes, greens and other delicious, fresh goods. This store also carries cute knickknacks, fresh milk from Lancaster and right now has discounted annuals that still have a nice vibrancy.
When: Daily, 9am - 7pm

Ardmore Farmer’s Market – But if you are looking for a little trip out of town during your farmer’s market adventuring, head over to Ardmore for the Ardmore Farmer’s Market. Right on the edge of Suburban Square, this market has a wide variety of goods and services. From produce to seafood, Di Bruno Brothers to Saxby’s and everything in between, you can really make a day of it right next door in Ardmore.
When: Mondays – Fridays, 8am to 7pm; Saturdays, 8am to 6 pm; Sundays 9am to 4pm
